Abstract

In this paper the author explains the purpose of the toolbox padlet meant to

assist both instructors and students in achieving the selected state standard;

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2​ Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables,

and sounds (phonemes).​ The toolbox contains various videos, songs, activities, games,

and teacher guides needed in order to help students and educators be successful on

the path to establishing literacy.

Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

Concept/Skill: ​Students will be able to learn all the sounds that the individual letters make
and the syllables that are created with the vowels. They will learn how to segment words
by those sounds in order to decode words as they read in order to establish literacy.

Initial Teaching Activities Assessments

-Students will start on rug & sing along to
the Phonemic Awareness alphabet song.
-Discussion/review of the alphabet-How
many letters are there? How many
sounds do they make? How many
vowels? How many sounds do they
make? What is a syllable? What do they
do?
-Students will then form a circle on the
rug to play, “Fishing for Syllabes”.
Students go fishing and when they catch
a fish it has a picture on it and they have
to clap out the number of syllables that it
has.
-Students will then return to their seats
where they will work to match puzzle
cards together that have a syllable on one
side and a consonant on another side to
form words
-During the song I will be checking for
participation as singing can promote
language development
-I will individualize with the students, ask
them questions, and let them ask me
questions.
-Throughout the game I will be using
formative assessment on an individual
basis as each student takes their turn and
also as they participate within the group.
-As the students work independently I will
circle the room stopping at their desks
asking them to recite the words once they
form them.
