CPD 20302
Mini Project – Process Control Strategies For
Chemical Process Applications
1.) Introduction.
The main purpose of this particular Mini Project is to fulfill the requirement
of Course Learning Outcome #2: Distinguish the different Control Strategies for
various Chemical Process Applications. Therefore, it is with hope that at the end
of this Mini Project, the students have managed to obtain the required
competency as far this course is concerned. In addition, both the knowledge and
experience that have been obtained will be beneficial in both of their career as
well as in their studies for Bachelor Level later on.

First and foremost, it is important to remember the purpose or objectives

of having Process Control at the first place. Objective #1: Safety – The operation
of all the equipments and plant as whole should be in safe condition without and
damages as well as injuries and death to operators/workers. Objective #2:
Production Specifications – Quality of products need to be in line with the
requirements that already being set by both the management/company as well as
the customers. Objective #3: Environmental Regulations – Any waste generated
by the plant must comply with rules and regulations as well as the specification by
the authorities in charge of environment such as Department Of Safety And
Health ( DOSH ). Objective #4: Operational Constraint – This is in relation to
Objective #1 to always operate/run the equipment not exceeding the maximum
allowable limit that not only can bring about damage to the equipment in the
long run but also endanger the safety and lives of operators as well. Objective #5:
Economy – This is in relation to gain profit from selling the product of the plant
that should remain in balance with cost of operating and usage of energy in the
plant.

In order to ensure the proper understanding and implementation, the task

being assigned to the students are being given in stages which can be clearly seen
from the next section. Therefore, the list of instructions will be updated whenever
the present task has been completed and the future task is to be assigned.

2. Instructions.
Task #1: You are required to form of MAXIMUM Group Members of FOUR ( 4 ).
Please do ensure that your members are well-mixed, i.e., there is not suppose to
be the same sex/gender in the group.

Task #2: You are being given EIGHT ( 8 ) Lists of Manufactured Chemicals. Please
choose the BEST THREE ( 3 ) from the list. The criterion of selection should be
based on easiness to obtain information from reference book/internet. When you
have done your selection, put the list into categories of FIRST CHOICE, SECOND
CHOICE and FINAL CHOICE. If later on you have found out that any of your choice
contains lack of information, you have the permission to change with strong and
proper justification.

Task #3: When you have finalized your choice for List of Manufactured Chemicals,
obtain Process & Instrumentation Diagram ( P&ID ) OR you are allowed to
produce the SIMPLIFIED version of Process Block Diagram for your selected plant.
The purpose of having this diagram is in order to both study and understand the
process that takes place in the plant. This knowledge and understanding is going
to be crucial in carrying out the next coming tasks.

Task #4: Based from EITHER your Process Block Diagram OR Process &
Instrumentation Diagram ( P&ID ) of your selected plant, you are required to
identify the different Control Strategies that are being utilized in the plant. Your
identification should come under the following categories of Control Strategies:
Category #1: Manual/Automatic Control. Category #2: Control Strategy #1 – On-
Off / Feedback / Feed-forward / Ratio Control. Category #3: Control Strategy #2
– Cascade / Inferential / Selector Or Override / Adaptive Control. Also, indicate
the frequency of occurrence for EACH category that you can find in the diagram.

Task #5: From your list in Task #4, give brief descriptions for EACH Control
Strategy being utilized by focusing on the mechanism/principles in performing its
duty in the process/plant. You are also allowed to give some
suggestion/recommendation for improvement in terms of the type of Control
Strategy that you wish to be added/changed in order to improve the
process/performance of the plant.

Task #6: Arrange all your obtain information in the form of REPORT WRITING. The
outline/format of your report is given in the proceeding section.

3. Table Of Contents.
This particular section is concerning contents that should be available in your
Report Writing. Also, Assessment Marks for each section of your report are being
included as well. Please ensure that you strictly follow the outline given in order
to avoid from unnecessary marks deduction.
