MATERIAL IN
Material entering in the stripper per hour is
CS2 = 6620.41 g mol
H2S = 2742.16 g mol
Oil = 34736.45 g mol
The total material entering in the stripper is L = 44099.2 g mol.

H2S = 2742.16 g mol
Oil = 34.73 g mol
The total material leaving the stripper from top is V = 9364.20 g mol

BUBBLE POINT OF BOTTOM PRODUCT

The basic equation for the bubble point is
Nc
 KiXi 1.0
i1
Where
Ki is the equilibrium constant
Xi is the composition of each component
Nc is the number of component
To use above equation, a temperature is assumed, and values of Ki are obtained from
vapor pressure data and the known total pressure. If the equation is not satisfied,
reassumed temperature and calculation repeated until equation is satisfied.

DETERMINING THE PRELIMINARY DIA OF THE COLUMN

m
Volumetric flow rate of vapor V*= V
dv
V*=0.0562 m3/sec
Assumed a superficial velocity (vf) of 2ft/sec

vf=0.61m/sec

So area of column (AC) is AC=V*/vf

=0.09227m2
Since the area of column is given as
AC=D2/4
½
So dia. of column is D=(4AC/)
D=0.3427m
D=1.124ft

SELECTION OF COLUMN
As our diameter is less than 2.5ft (D<2.5ft), so use a packed column…2
SELECTION OF PACKING AND MATERIAL
Column used packed bed
Choosing Packing 1in ceramic intalox saddles
Packing size Dp =25mm =1in
Packing factor Fp =300 m-1
Cf =98
Surface area of the packing material = a = 253
Now
m
L dv / dL
Flow factor = m …2
V
Where
mV is the flow rate of vapors in kg/sec
mL is the flow rate of liquid in kg/sec
dv is the density of vapors
dL is the density of liquid

Flow factor=
1.902 2.96 / 809.96
0.167
=0.690
Pressure drop taken 30 mm of water/m of packing (it should b/w 15-50)
Now using flow factor value & assumed pressure drop read the value of K4 from fig
11.44 (p-603)…2
K4 =0.45
Also at flooding K4 =0.87
k 4atdesignpressure
%age flooding =
k 4atflooding

= 0.45  100 =71.91%.

0.87
V*W =Gas mass flow rate per unit cross sectional area, can be calculated from
relation: (eq11.118)…2
V*W [ K 4dg (dl  dg ) ]0.5
= l 0.1
13.1Fp( )
dl
=0.031 Kg/m2.s
Now actual area of column=Aa = V*W /mv
=0.1861 m2
So actual dia. of column Dc  4 A

=0.4868m
=1.59ft
By rounding off D = 1.6ft
=0 .4878m
2
Corrected area A = D =0.18689 m2
4
% flooding at selected diameter =
Aa (0.719)
A
=71.62%
So dia of column is 1.6 ft
CHECK FOR CHANELLING
To check whether the condition to minimize channeling are meet or not take ratio of
D/Dp

D/Dp =19.51
It should be greater than 8.
CALCULATION OF THE THEORETICAL NUMBER OF STAGES

Mean temp. =
105 490 =297.5F
2
K-VALUE
The equilibrium constant (K) is define as
Ki  Pi
P
Where
Pi is the vapor pressure of ith component
P is the total pressure of the system
From vapor pressure data at mean temp

Pi (psia) P (psia) Ki
CS2 200 22.05 9.07
H2S 3000 22.05 136.05

STRIPPING FACTOR
The stripping factor (S) is define as

S  KV
L
Where
V is the vapor flow rate
L is the liquid flow rate
Ki V L Si=KiV/L
CS2 9.07 9364.20 44099.02 1.926
H2S 136.05 9364.20 44099.02 28.89

The total number of stages required for desired amount of stripping can be calculated
from formula
S Ne1  S
Fraction strip  Ne1
S 1

No. of stage Fraction CS2 strip Fraction H2S strip

1 0.6582 0.9665
2 0.8493 0.9988
3 0.9274 0.9998
4 0.9636 0.9999
5 0.9815 1
6 0.9904 1
7 0.9950 1

So for 99.5% stripping of CS2 the numbers of theoretical stages required are
Ne=7

EFFICIENCY
In order to determine the efficiency of each stage we required viscosity and thermal
diffusivity of the key component.
Viscosity of CS2 at mean temp. μ=0.0099cp
Thermal diffusivity of CS2 α=10K
=90.7
α μ=0.897
So efficiency of stage is
Eo=0.55
Hence the actual numbers of stages required for desire separation are
N  Ne
A Eo
NA=12.73 ≈ 13

THE HEIGHT EQUIVALENT TO THEORETICAL NO. OF STAGES

The height equivalent to theoretical number of stage (HETS) is calculated from the
relation
HETS=0.5m……….for D<0.5m…2
Or HETS=D0.3……..…for D>0.5m
As our dia. is 0.487m (i.e. D<0.5m), so
HETS=0.5m
TOTAL HEIGHT OF THE COLUMN

The liquid height at the bottom of the column (LS) is calculated from the relation
LS=0.06NA+2.0…2
Where
NA is the total number of stages
LS=2.76m
Now the total column height (H) is
H=Ne (HETS)+3ft+0.25D+LS
Where
Ne is the theoretical no. of stages
D is the actual dia. Of the column
LS is the liquid height at the bottom
H=7.30m
L/D RATIO OF COLUMN
The total height of the column is H=7.3m
The diameter of the column is D=0.487m
So L/D ratio is
L  14.96
D
PRESSURE DROP
For pressure drop calculation we required flow factor and gas mass velocity

mL
Flow factor = dv / dL …2
mv
Where
mv is the flow rate of vapors in kg/sec
mL is the flow rate of liquid in kg/sec
dv is the density of vapors
dL is the density of liquid

Flow factor=
1.902 2.96 / 809.96
0.167
=0.690
Flow rate of vapors mv =0.167kg/sec
Area of column A =0.18689 m2

So mass velocity of the vapors (G) is

m
G v
A
G=0.8956kg/m2sec
=659.37 lb/hrft2
The ordinate of fig. 6.26 is given by………..3
G 2C  0.2  w
f L

gc   2
G L
Where
G is the mass velocity of vapors
Cf is the packing coefficient
L is the viscosity of liquid
w is the density of water
G is the density of gas
L is the density of liquid
gc is a constant and equal to 4.18*108

The density of water w=62.5 lb/ft3

The density of gas G=0.1849 lb/ft3
The density of liquid L=50.51 lb/ft3
The viscosity of liquid L=2 cp
The packing coefficient Cf=98
So
G 2C  0.2  w
f L
 =0.0155
gc   2
G L
From fig. 6.26 (page 160) the pressure drop in inches of water per ft of packing is
dP=0.35 in water/ft of packing
=28.7mm water/m of packing
=209.52mm water
=0.297Psia
