Elsa and Her Conflict of Duties

Last time I watched Frozen (the first one), it was just a typical story of a princess for
me. Perhaps, it sounds uncritical this opinion would be because back then, I was not into
movies. But now, everything becomes different, particularly to watching movie. One which
aroused my interest to be into this habit was my decision to know more about the ever
heard “Frozen II;” this time, to feed my love of wisdom.

One that made me philosophize that time was the character of that overrated Elsa.
She has that ‘icy’ power that makes her stand above other princesses. Not only that, Elsa’s
character is oftentimes mature and kind of firm to her decisions and actions. Her bravery
penetrates across strong winds even this time, her rival is the omnipotent nature.

Fighting against the powerful forces of the Enchanted Forest, her initiative, to which
becomes her duty, to protect Arendelle from harm by using her powers, is being limited by
the reality acting in context. Knowing Elsa is the only one with the capacity, other characters
characterized as humans may consider Elsa as a human-like being with her powers that may
bring peace, or for higher chances, some form of disaster.

This where the discussion between morality and ethics come in play. Elsa’s duty to
save her place and the humanity as well might be considered moral because it is deeply
rooted from a compassionate desire to do good and bring good to other. On the other hand,
her duty might be regarded as unethical because her powers do not subscribe to
community- based notion of the right and the real in a point of view of a human; thus,
forming a conflict to her actions.

Despite the imbalance towards her duties, I am glad that she won her battle. Thanks
to Nicomachean ethics! Elsa might have known herself attributing a virtue of bravery. No
matter what conflict it might be, her characters remains ultimate for me.
