Group Activity: Information Needs Assessment

Thesis Title: THE BULACAN PROVINCIAL LIBRARY AND ITS

COMMUNITY: AN INFORMATION NEEDS ANALYSIS
Author: Lenra Machrine E. Avila
Methodology:  Research Design – descriptive method
 Population – residents within 2000 meters away from the
library
 Sample – the head librarian and 180 residents
 Research Instruments – (1) interview with head librarian, (2)
survey questionnaire adapted from a previous related study for
the 180 residents
 Data Analysis – frequency distribution and percentage
Findings: The study’s scope of information needs is very broad but to summarize
relevant findings, many of the respondents were students though the
library’s collection also catered for information needs outside
academics. The head librarian thinks positively about meeting the
needs of the residents, but the residents stated otherwise. Many
preferred to use the Web for their information needs for less hassle and
because many did not even know where the library is, the services
offered are not even used to its full potential, if not at all.
Realizations: Regardless of a library’s efforts to expand the collection, acquire
information resources, subscriptions, and other programs for their
community, if the target patrons does not have any knowledge of the
library and/or its location, then the information needs assessment
conducted for the library and its corresponding additions and/or
adjustments will be useless since the users won’t even be using it.

Methodology:  Research Design – descriptive and exploratory method

 Population – Elderly citizens living in Quezon City
 Sample – 20 respondents, 12 from GRACES and 8 residing
from their home address.
 Research Instruments – face-to-face interview
Findings: Centrally focused on the information needs and information seeking
behavior of Filipino elderly citizens within Quezon City, the researcher
found out that they prefer television as their most used source of news,
leisure, and self-realized information. Aside from that, they are also
engaged in reading and social interaction to make their days more
productive. On the other hand, the researcher revealed that the elderly
citizens, regardless of their demographic profile, are still experiencing
difficulties in seeking for information on a daily basis such as failing
eyesight and dealing with biased information.
Realizations Filipino elderly citizens are marginalized, to a point that there is a need
to strengthen the policy that governs them in addressing their
information needs. Public libraries, solely the type of library an elderly
can immediately access, are highly equipped with collections that they
can utilize and activities such as seminars and community services to
further make their lives more productive. In order to achieve this feat,
authorities must regularly inform them since there are still some
elderly citizens who do not know that libraries exist in their respective
areas.
