Thoughts, feelings and behaviours

Introduction to the differences and links between thoughts,

feelings and behaviours, distinct types of thinking errors that
lead to negative thoughts and the process of challenging
thoughts in practice.

Group Session 3 of the Back Skills Training programme

aims to:

 Find out how the goal setting and baselines went from
Group Session 2.

 Introduce thought monitoring and challenging.

At the beginning of the session, review patients’

homework to find out how they got on with their baseline and
goal setting. Refer to the Group Session 2 Guidance Notes
(able to be downloaded from Step 4.7) if you need to be
reminded about the homework from this session.

Choose one or two problems / difficulties that the patients had

and problem solve these with the group. Learning to problem
solve is an important part of the Back Skills Training
programme.
Group Session 3 begins by exploring the link between our
thoughts and our behaviour, and leads on to learning about
how people’s thoughts can play a central role in their ongoing
low back pain.

In the latter part of the session, you will teach strategies both
to monitor and challenge any unhelpful thoughts they may
have about their back pain.
