190 junior and senior students currently in the program. An additional 73 students graduated from our
Certificate of Advanced Accounting Proficiency (CAAP) program. Our students continue to enjoy great
success in the job market, leading the business school in internship opportunities and job placements.
One of our graduates, Even Chen, received the Nobili Medal awarded by University faculty and provost at

It’s a pleasure to write to all of you- so many of whom were my students. This is my 21st year teaching at Santa
Clara University and I still truly love my work here.
My career in accounting started here in Santa Clara University’s MBA program. I graduated in 1978 and worked at
Intel in internal audit, then Deloitte in Audit, and then decided to accept an offer from then Main Hurdman (now
KPMG) to begin a career in taxation. I earned a Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University in 1988. By 1984,
when our son was born, I was asked to be the CFO of a family business in San Francisco, a position I still hold to
this day.
As that business transitioned to from an active to a passive business model, I made a decision to look into
teaching accounting. I taught at Evergreen Valley College and San Jose State University before being offered
a teaching position here at SCU. While the main classes I teach now are Intro to Managerial Accounting and
Personal Financial Planning, I’ve taught our Financial Accounting, Auditing and Taxation classes as well. I also
developed meaningful curriculum for Accounting Interns very soon after my arrival here, and have been the Director
of Academic Internships for the Department for 19 years. Perhaps one of the more unique elements of my role here
at SCU is that I also serve and was a founding member of the Drahmann Academic Advising Center. It’s been in this
role as University Advisor that I have come to truly understand a “student point of view,” and that has made a very
positive difference in the way I teach. It has also educated me as to how students and especially Accounting majors
can leverage different programs throughout the University as second majors, or a major with complimentary minors.
I believe my training here has delivered real value added to our students.
I’ve been truly blessed to have had such meaningful experience in so many areas of the accounting profession. It
helps me to understand the many opportunities that can be possible for our students and to work with them in
developing their best and most meaningful outcomes. Teaching at Santa Clara University has provided me the
perfect, full circle experience for my career; I am so very grateful!

SCU’s Annual Meet the Firms Night
The SCU Accounting Association (SCUAA) hosted its 38th annual Meet-the-Firms Night on Thursday, September
26, 2019 in Locatelli Center from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The evening united SCU students with potential employers
that wish to hire them. This year's attendees included 27 companies and over 125 students. About 70 percent of
the students were undergraduate accounting and A&IS majors, and the remaining students were primarily current
or recent graduates from the CAAP program. Most firms brought several representatives, and an abundance of
unique company swag, to discuss employment opportunities with SCU undergraduates, CAAP students, and 2019
CAAP alumni.
The Accounting Department hosted its 17th annual Accounting Information Night on Thursday, January 31, 2019
in Locatelli Center from 6:30 PM to 8:00PM. Lewis Chew (CFO, Dolby Laboratories) moderated the event, which
commenced with roundtable discussion sessions involving the professionals and students who sat at each of the 26
tables. During these sessions, 55 professionals from 20 different companies shared their professional experiences
with over 165 sophomore business students. Representatives from the following firms participated:
Following the roundtable discussion sessions, students listened to a panel discussion with four SCU Accounting
alumni: Rufina Adams (CFO, True Wind Capital), Andy Armanino (Managing Partner, Armanino), Alan Nguyen
(Manager, Digital Risk, PwC), and Cynthia Chavez Wing (R&D Finance Associate Director, Gilead Services). The
panelists addressed a variety of questions from the moderator as well as students in the audience, ranging from why
they chose accounting as a major, how their majors prepared them for their professional careers, what they like (and
don’t like) about their job, and alternative career paths.
The evening concluded with a raffle of prizes generously donated by the following companies: Abbott, Stringham
& Lynch, Andersen Tax, Armanino, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Moss Adams, and PwC. Over ten lucky students
received raffle prizes including an Oculus Virtual Reality headset, Bose Soundlink Color II speaker, Powerbeats3
wireless earphones, Amazon Echo, Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones, Earthquake basket including two game
tickets, and Target ($25), Starbucks ($25) and Amazon gift cards (2-$100 each).

Annual Sophomore Accounting/A&IS Career Fair
Februrary 13, 2019
The Accounting Department hosted its second annual Sophomore Accounting/A&IS Career Fair on Wednesday,
February 13, 2019 in Locatelli Center from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The following twelve firms attended and
conversed with over 70 students:
The Sophomore Accounting/A&IS Career Fair provided young SCU students with the opportunity to interact with
firms and learn more about summer leadership programs internships. Firm recruitment of undergraduate Accounting
and A&IS majors has evolved to the point that a significant percentage of CPA firm recruiting for their summer junior
internship programs occur while the students are still sophomores (a year in advance of the internship!) Many of our
students who attended the Career Fair were later invited by several of these firms to interview for 2019 summer
leadership programs and internships during the week of March 4-8 at the SCU Career Center.

Fall Accounting Career Night
Novemeber 4, 2019
More than 140 students attended the Accounting Department’s third annual Fall Accounting Careers Night on November
4, 2019 in Lucas Hall. Jack Lazar (’87), (former CFO at Atheros, GoPro, and several other companies), moderated a panel
of four SCU alums featuring:
The panel answered several questions about their work experience at both large and small employers, the value of their
SCU education, whether to major in finance or accounting, and the importance of strong mentorship. The panelists also
discussed the applicability of their accounting and programming classes in the workplace, the value of an engineering
class when working in the valley, and insights to human interactions provided through a psychology class.
About 60 percent of the students who attended the event were in their first year at SCU, with the remaining 40
percent from the sophomore class. About two-thirds of the students had not yet declared a major. After the event,
students stayed around for 45 minutes, talking with the panelists and Mr Lazar. Many more students attended the
event than we expected (last year, about 110 students attended Fall Accounting Careers Night), so many students had
to stand the entire evening. Consequently, we plan to hold the event next year in Locatelli Center. We wish to extend
a special thanks to Jack and each of our panelists for sharing their time and knowledge and staying after the event to
engage in one on one conversations with students.

CAAP News
Our Certificate of Advanced Accounting Proficiency (CAAP) program continues to be one of the most time-
effective and affordable accounting programs in the country, providing all the courses necessary to sit for the
California CPA exam in 14 weeks (during the summer with classes that meet daily) or in 9 months (during the
academic year program that meets on the weekends).
A major new addition to the program this year was the introduction of the CAAP Alumni Ambassador Program.
This is a group who have successfully negotiated the rigors of the CAAP program and are willing to give back
with their time and support to mentor students currently going through the program. The goal of the program is
for the ambassadors to serve as a resource to students to direct them toward the successful completion of the
program and to provide support and encouragement when the going gets tough in this incredibly concentrated
program. Each student is paired with an ambassador, and the frequency of contact depends on the needs of each
student.
Attrition in the CAAP program is particularly high in the early classes, when students are overwhelmed with the
pace of the classes and wondering whether they can make it through the entire program. The ambassadors serve
as a positive example and enthusiastic cheerleader for the students to stick it out by offering study tips, time
management skills, and creating an attitude for success as the new students adapt to the program.
As the students progress through the program, the ambassadors provide tips for interviewing and resume
refinement, CPA exam strategies, and most importantly, insight into what a future in the accounting profession
may look like.
Many thanks and kudos to our ambassadors for their willingness to volunteer their most valuable asset, their
time. Comments from the end-of-program surveys this summer included accolades for “the faculty, the
ambassadors, and Toni”. Many thanks to Toni Santillan (CAAP Program Director), who conceived of and carried
through on this enhancement to the program.
