Figure 1 Experiment set up.............................................................................................................................................3
Objective
To demonstrate the law of the lever experimentally.
Apparatus
1. 44 x 25cm timber beam
2. Rectangular block and triangular support timber pieces
3. 2no. hangers and set of weights
4. Balance
5. Measuring Tape
Theory
This experiment examines the concept of moment equilibrium.
Procedure
1. The beam of timber was measured and checked to have a straight linear shape.
2. The two blocks were set to have a pin on top to handle the timber beam
3. The timber beam has to be balanced, in order to do that you cut two small pieces of
strings.
4. The two strings are put on either end to let the M1 and M2 to hang on it.
5. Move the M1 and M2 until the beam is balanced.
6. Once the beam is balanced take measurements and record them.
7. Calculate the moment and the reactions.
Results
When observing the outcomes, the restoration and reversal times of the reaction are clear. The
beam came into balance and measurements were recorded when testing the apparatus. The actual
results are not compared to the theoretical ones because the weight distribution of the beam has
an unbalanced shape. The moisture content of the beam over the span could be different and the
wood material would not have a balanced self - weight. When preforming the test, it might have
resulted there was a few human errors when recording the reading.
