REPORTED SPEECH

In the report, the presenter tells us about the soccer world cup and said some words that we
use in English.

Throughout the history of the World Cup, various competition systems have been used to
determine the team that will be crowned the best in the world. However, there said is
generally a pattern of establishing two rounds in the said competition, an exception from the
1934 and 1938 editions, in which a single direct limitation format was detected.

For the first round of the tournament, teams are divided into groups of four, although
previously, and due to the withdrawal of some competitors, there said have been groups of
up to two combined. To this end, the organizing committee conducts a preliminary draw in
which the best teams are established as seeded teams and try to prevent teams from the same
confederation from facing each other during the first round, an exception for UEFA teams
that due to their number, it is impossible that they are all separate.

In said each of the groups, all teams face each other on a single home run. Each team
accumulates a score said based on its results throughout these matches: 3 points for a victory
(until 1990 it was only 2), 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The four teams are ordered according
to their score in descending order. In case there are two or more teams with the same score,
there are other tie-breaking criteria, which are currently:

 Greater goal difference.

 Highest number of goals scored.
 Greater number of points obtained in the matches played between the tied teams.
 Greater goal difference in games played between tied teams.
 Greater number of goals scored in the matches played between the tied teams.
 Organizing committee draw.

The criteria smentioned above allow determining which teams qualify for the second round.
When said the number of participants is a power of two (8, 16 or 32) they classify the two
best teams in the group, but when said they do not (for example, 24 participants) they can
classify some of the best third parties.
