REVIEW OF EXTERNAL PERFORMANCE

INTRODUCTION:-

As a Malaysian, it’s our responsibility to understand the culture of not only our own, but
also other races in Malaysia. As a part of Arts and Cultural Performance team, me and my team
certainly need basic knowledge of cultural performance in order to draft our performance on
cultural night. To equip us with the knowledge of cultural dance of different races, me and my
team, in a total of 9 people, went to Malaysian Tourism Centre (MaTiC) to enjoy while learning
a cultural performance by the talented dance group from Istana Budaya. On 31st Oct 2018, we
headed to MaTiC at Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur from UTAR at about 1.45pm after having our
lunch together, reaching there at almost 2.30pm.

We registered ourselves for the show outside the theatre before entering it. The show
started at 3.00pm sharp, ended around 4.00pm. There were around 70 audiences in the theatre,
including 3 audiences from Europe and around 30 from a primary school. l. It was absolutely
amazing to have witnessed something great like this, it was enjoyable and not to mention,
benefited me in many ways. Mr Sim had us reminded to focus on the performance and take note
to improve ours on actual performance day, 23th November.

DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE:-

Clock ticks 3pm and the emcee of the day welcomed us with a very fluent English. The
opening dance is a traditional dance called Tari Tualang Tiga. The dance described both the
Malay male and female politeness in dance movements. They danced like and slow motion
because that showcases the Dexterity and Softness of the Malay martial arts that still preserves
the Malay costume. Besides that, the second performances have portrayed the beautiful and
gracefulness of cultural in Malay communities. It known as Zapin Bunian, Inang Memikat and
Joget Teruna Dara. The next coming up dance is Sewang dance that brought out the routines of
aboriginal people. We have three major races in Malaysia which are Malay, Chinese. and Indian.
So, they prepared a popular folk dance, Buyung dance for Indian community while Fan dance for

Chinese community. So, through the traditional folk dances people can acquainted with one or
another’s culture.

After introduce the traditional dances in Malaysia, they brought us to the nature of the
traditional dances by presenting the Kanjet Ngeleput from Sarawak and Mangunatip dance from
Sabah. These kind of traditional dances are very complex, and the question about what extent
such dances are traditional is arguable. Kanjet Ngeleput is a dance that portrayed the merry
ambience when the orang Ulu community they go for hunting and picnicking in the jungle.
While waiting for the hunters to return with their preys, the other amused themselves by dancing
accompanied by the music from an instrumental called sape. The dance also displayed the agile
yet delicate skills of warrior hunting using blowpipe in the jungle to get their foods. In addition,
Mangunatip dance is commonly know as bamboo dance is considered as one of the popular
traditional dance in Sabah. The Mangunatip is derived from the word ‘’ Apit’’ which means to
press between two surface. In the dance, dancers need good timing and aglity to put their feet
between the clapping bamboo poles without being trapped.

Before the end, the dancers invited four volunteers to go up on the stage to perform
“Apit” and I am honored to be one of the four. It was a great experience. The show ends with a
good crowd dancing where all of the audience was invited to dance with the performers.

REVIEW OF LEARNING:-

Speaking of the precious chance to dance on the stage with the dancers, it’s much harder
than what I thought watching from the seats. However, I am glad that I am able to finish the
dance without having mistakes, thanks for the lessons by the performers. I am truly amazed by
the coordination of the songs and the dance movements when I experienced it personally. They
have their own uniqueness in their cultural dance which I have never get to see growing up in my
hometown, Penang.

People have been saying that cultural dance is a way of differentiating our very own
ethnic and races, especially from the minorities. Indeed, cultural dance is absolutely one of many

ways for people to express their identity, it tells a lot about their lifestyle, language, interest and
more. Going down from time to time, generation to generation, our lifestyle and technology have
been improving rapidly. As a Chinese, I witnessed friends around me who do not celebrate some
Chinese festivals that the older generation used to celebrate. Technology has changed the
lifestyle of people in this generation, and of course there’s always two ways of changing, either
it’s good or bad. Personally, my greatest lesson of this performance has to be out of the dance,
and that’s embracing the technology, knowing that it would be a greater tool for us to keep and
pass our identity down to the younger generation. This performance has reminded to always be
reminded of my identity, not letting the change of the world changes me, and that’s how I make
good use of technology, to control and not to be controlled.

REVIEWS OF OUTSIDE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES REPORT

INTRODUCTION:-

On the 11th of November, 2018, UTAR’s Department of Soft Skills and Competency
(DSSC) organized a workshop programme to enhance the skills and knowledge of students
towards emergency situation. This workshop named CARE (Citizen’s Action Respond
Emergency) was conducted at KA 804 from 9pm to 1pm. This workshop attracted a total of
almost 100 students. The reason for me to join this is that I have been wanting to become a
doctor since young, saving lives. Unfortunately, parted by my own strength, I chose to go with
physics instead of biology. So, this is definitely a good chance for me to know more about action
towards emergency situation.

There are three main objectives of this workshop:

1. To encourage all that makes for the spiritual and moral strengthening of mankind in
accordance with the first great principle of the order embodied in the motto “ Pro Fide”
meaning “For the Faith”.

2. To encourage and promote all works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in
sickness, distress, suffering, or danger without any distinction in terms of race, class or
religion in accordance with the second great principle of the order embodied in motto ,
“Pro Utilitate Hominum”, that is “In the service of Humanity”.

3. To render First aid to the sick, wounded, disabled or suffering.

LEARNING PROCESS:-

A team of around 10 members from all around the world (some from Europe and some
from Asia) came together here in UTAR to provide training to us. At the start of the workshop, a
senior from the team gave us a talk on the importance of getting involved and learning about
emergency actions. After that, We have been divided into 4 groups to proceed with the activities.
The taught us about how to do CPR(Cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and also some methods to
help an adult or baby is choking. The instructors are friendly, they will guide us all the time

during the activities . Besides that , instructors have shared some of their experiences of helping
people with CPR.

REVIEW OF LEARNING:-

“We don’t have to be a doctor to save lives”. This workshop has certainly “awakes” me
on the importance of knowing how to deal with emergency situations. It was a unique experience
of me to do CPR and helps to choking, I felt that as a citizen of our nation, everyone must be
prepared for emergency situations. Accidents are increasing day by days, if we are not able to
give support, or at least reduce the damage caused by casualty, they might have their life taken
away.
