BUSWAYS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. The work shall consist of furnishing and installation of low-voltage feeder busways as shown on the
drawings and specified herein.

Short Circuit Rating shall conform with IEC 60439

F. This specification is based on the standards and publications referenced herein. The Contractor may,
upon the approval of the Owner, use other standards and publications, the use of which will result in
equipment of comparable or better quality than that specified. The Contractor shall submit a copy of
the applicable sections of the other standards in the English language for review by the Owner.

1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Busway shall be totally enclosed, outdoor, low-impedance type non-segregated phase, rating as
shown on drawings, designed manufactured and tested for IEE C37.23 or approved equal.

B. Material and installation shall comply with all applicable codes, recommended practice, and
standards of ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, UL or IEC. Arrangements, details, and location shall be as
indicated in drawings.

C. Short circuit rating of fittings with protective devices shall be equal to the lower short circuit rating
of the protective device or the busway. Short circuit rating of busway plugs equals the rating of the
fuses or circuit breaker used in the plug.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Manufacturer shall provide copies of following documents to Engineer for review, evaluation and
approval.

1. Product Data and Sample on specified product.

2. Show Drawings on specified product.

3. Design Data, detailed component data on specified product, such as CT ratios, ratings.

4. Certified trip curves for each specified product.

5. Certified copies of all Type (Design) and Verification Test Reports.

1.5 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE DATA

A. Manufacturer shall provide copies of installation, operation and maintenance procedures to owner in
accordance with general requirements of Division 1 and Division 16.

B. Submit operation and maintenance data based on factory and field testing, operation and maintenance
of specified product.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer shall have specialized in the manufacture and assemble of low-voltage feeder busway
for 10 years.

B. Low-voltage feeder busway shall be listed and/or classified by Underwriters Laboratories in


accordance with standards listed in herein or approved equal.
C. Manufacturer’s Certificate of ISO 9000 Compliance.

D. Installer’s Certificate of ISO 9000 Compliance.

E. Installer has specialized in installing low voltage feeder busways with minimum 10 years
documented experience.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, protect and handle products in accordance with recommended practices listed in
manufacturer’s Installation and Maintenance Manuals.

B. Deliver each low-voltage feeder busway in individual shipping cartons for ease of handling. Each
busway shall be wrapped for protection.

C. Inspect and report concealed damage to carrier within specified time.

D. Store in a clean, dry space. Maintain factory protection or cover with heavy canvas or plastic to keep
out dirt, water, construction debris, and traffic. (Heat enclosures to prevent condensation.)

E. Handle in accordance with applicable NEMA or I.E.C. Standards and manufacturer’s written
instructions to avoid damaging equipment and installed devices.

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Follow (standards) service conditions before, during and after busway installation.

B. Low-voltage feeder busways shall be located outside where excess humidity, dust and dirt are
present. Ambient temperature of area will be between minus 10 and plus 50 degrees C.

C. Make all necessary field measurements to verify that equipment shall fit in allocated space in full
compliance with minimum required clearances specified in national Electrical Code / I.E.C.

1.9 WARRANTY

a. manufacturer shall warrant equipment to be free defects in materials and workmanship for the period of 5
years from initial hand over and 15 year spare part

PART 2 - PRODUCT

2.1 RATING

The voltage and current rating of Busways shall be as indicated on drawings. The Busway shall have
a minimum 6 cycle short circuit rating symmetrical for ratings FOR EXAPLE 125KA rating through
1600A.
2.2 MATERIALS

A. Furnish feeder low-voltage busways as indicated in drawings. Refer to drawings for actual layout
and location of equipment and components, current ratings of devices, bus bars, components voltage
rating of devices, components and assemblies and other required detailed.

B. Busway housing shall be extruded aluminum for maximum protection against corrosion from water
and other contaminants normally encountered during construction. Housing shall be totally enclosed
for protection against mechanical damage and dust accumulation. All hardware shall be plated to
prevent corrosion. Minimum enclosure protection shall be IP53 FOR INDOOR AND IP65 for
outdoor busways.

C. All bus bar insulation material shall be epoxy NEMA Class F or I.E.C. (155 degree C). Insulation
shall be self-extinguishing and shall be impervious to acids, alkalis, acetones, machine oils and
lubricates commonly found in industrial environments. Manufacturer shall provide test data
documenting insulation’s impact resistance, chemical resistance, and expected life (50 years).

D. Busway shall be rated as indicated on drawings.

E. Bus bars shall be electrolytic tinned copper. Temperature rise at any point in busway shall not
exceed 55 degree C above 50°C ambient when operating at rated load current. Housing ground patch
can be used according to manufacturer’s standards or recommendations. In that case system
connections shall be silver plated. Neutral busbars shall be of same materials and dimensions as
phase busbars.

F. Hanger System: Horizontal busway runs shall be UL listed or approved equal to hang on maximum 3
m centers in any position. Vertical busway riser runs shall be supported with spring hangers with
maximum of 5 m centers.

G. Where busway passes through walls of floors, manufacturer shall provide three-hour firestop and
vapor stop within system within bus duct enclosure.

H. Joints shall have plus or minus ½ inch adjustability. Joint-Guard Protection System shall be used.
See paragraph. Joints shall be able to be made from one side when busway is installed against a wall
or ceiling. Plus-in and feeder shall use identical parts. All multi-stacks shall be phase collected.

I. Short Circuit Ratings: The short circuit rating of the busway, including its integral fittings and
protective devices, shall be the lowest of the short circuit rating of the busway, its fittings or
protective devices. The short circuit withstand of the busway shall be not less than the available fault
current. Busways shall be designed that maximum voltage drop shall not exceed 2.5%.

1. The tap off boxes shall be rated for current ratings as shown on drawings. These will be circuit
breaker type and shall have interrupting ratings as shown on drawings. These shall have a
releaseable cover interlock that prevents opening of cover except with breaker in off position.
An interlock to prevent insertion or removal from busway when in “ON” position shall be
provided, as well as interlock to prevent closing of circuit breaker with cover open shall be
provided.

2. The tap off units are fixed with busway by a safety bolt. The power supply can be adapted to
different locations simply by relocating the tap-off units.

3. Plug-in “Tap off Units” which cannot be operated directly from the floor shall be equipped with
suitable means for hook stick operation

K. Expansion Joints

Expansion joints shall be provided which shall be capable of taking up all thermal expansion,
assuming in full load condition. There shall be factory fabricated suitably designed for proper use on
building expansion joints.

L. Cable to Busway Connection

Factory fabricated cable to busway connection assembly shall be provided to terminate feeder cables
from switchboard.

M. Accessories: Furnish nameplates for each device as indicated in drawings. Color schemes shall be as
indicated on drawings.

1. Wall penetration section with flange and fire and vapor stop.

2. Reducer cubicles and special adapter cubicles, as required in drawings.

3. Furnish Joint-Guard Protection System that uses a “torque sensing bolt”. The system shall
measure the “elongation of the busway joint bolt”. When the bolt looses proper torque, a
“red indication shall appear in the bolt head”. After re-torquing the bolt, the red indication
shall recede and the bolt head shall return to normal color. The system shall be “self
renewing” without bolt replacement.

4. Flexible connections at end equipment when required to prevent vibration and allow thermal
expansion.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION:

A. Verify that busways are ready to install.

B. Verify field measurements.

C. Verify that required utilities are available, in proper location and ready for use.

D. Beginning of installation means installer accepts conditions.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install per manufacturer’s written instruction.

B. Install required safety labels.

3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Inspect installed busways for anchoring, alignment, ground and physical damage.

B. Check tightness of all accessible mechanical and electrical connections with calibrated torque
wrench. Minimum acceptable values shall be as specified in manufacturer’s instructions.

C. Megger busways using 1000 VDC megger. Check phase to phase, phase to ground. Individual
lengths should be at least 3 megohm(s). Entire run should be at least 1 megohm(s). Divide runs over
30 m long.

3.4 TESTING AND ADJUSTING

A. Each busway item shall pass a dielectric withstand test of 5000 VDC for 5 seconds.

B. Adjust all circuit breakers, switches, access doors, operating handles for free mechanical and / or
electrical operation as described in manufacturer’s instructions.

C. Adjust circuit breaker trip and time delay settings to required values.

3.5 CLEANING

A. Clean interiors of switchboards, panels, enclosures to remove construction debris, dirt, shipping
materials.

B. Repaint scratched or marred exterior surface to match original finish.
