MV CABLES
1.1. GENERAL
This Section is to specify the technical requirements for the Medium Voltage (MV)
NA2XSY. MV cable shall be manufactured according to IEC 60502-2, SPLN 43-5
The XLPE cables shall be designed for continuous operation under the following
conditions:
Conductor
The conductors shall be stranded plain annealed alumunium complying with BS 6360 or
IEC 228. The alumunium used shall have an International Standard Conductivity of
100%. The conductor shall be compacted round.
Conductor Screen
The conductor shield shall be of a material compatible with the conductor metal and shall
be uniformly and firmly bonded to the overlying insulation.
Insulation
The insulation material shall be of high quality, dry-cured, heat, moisture, ozone and
corona resistant cross-linked polyethylene compound. It shall comply with physical
and ageing requirements of paragraph 3.7 of ICEA S-66-524. The insulation shield
consist of a semi-conducting cross linked polyethylene compound extruded and
bonded to the insulation.
Bedding
A semi-conducting tape shall be applied over the insulation shield.
Metallic Screen
The metallic screen shall consist of concentric round uncoated copper wires helically
applied with a length of lay of approximately 10 times the calculated diameter over the
wires.
Binding Tape
A copper tape of not less than 0.2 mm thick shall be applied transversely over the
metallic screen.
Outer Covering
The outer protective covering shall be extruded continuous black PE sheath or PVC
sheath and shall contain an effective and long lasting termite repellent.
The nominal thickness of the outer sheath shall comply with the following and the
smallest thickness at any point shall not fall below 80 % of the nominal value by more
than 0.2 mm.
Identification
The manufacturer's name, rated voltage, conductor size and the appropriate
abbreviation shall be embossed on the outer PE or PVC sheath. Height of the letters
shall be 10.0 mm.
Immediately after the Works Tests, both ends of each cable length shall be sealed
by against the ingress of moisture, dirt and insects and the end projecting from the
drum shall be adequately protected against mechanical damage during handling and
transit.
Particulars of the cable, i.e. voltage, length, conductor size, number of cores, gross and
net weights, etc., are to be clearly shown on one flange of the drum. The direction of
rolling shall be conspicuously indicated by an arrow.
The following tests shall be carried out by the Contractor to determine that the cables
and their accessories comply with the specification and to provide necessary operating
data. The cost of carrying out such tests is deemed to be included in the tender Price.
All test, including Type Test, shall be witnessed by a representative of the Project
Manager.
Type test/tests of the cable may be exempted upon the submission of a certificate of
type tested for cables of similar design by the manufacturer. Type test certificates must
be duly signed by a representative of competent witnessing body.
In case where type test certificate is not available a complete type test is required to
be carried out and the cost of type test and witnessing the test by a representative
of the Project Manager is deemed to be included in the tender price.
Three copies of the records of all tests are to be submitted to the for Project
Manager approval before delivery of the equipment.
All instruments used for testing are, if required by the Project Manager to be calibrated by
an approved authority at the expense of the Contractor.
The frequency of the alternating current testing supply shall be in accordance with IEC
540 (Clause 2.6) and IEC 141-1 (Clause 4.1).
2. LV CABLES
2.1. GENERAL
All cables shall be brought to the site on reels or drums with seals intact. Broken coils,
or cables in which abrasions occur, shall be rejected and replaced by the Contractor at
his own expense.
Cable sizes for each circuit shall be selected to ensure that current carrying capacity will
be adequate and that voltage drop at the equipment serviced will not be excessive. The
minimum rating of cables supplying motors shall be 125% of motor full load current.
Conduit may be run on the surface of walls and ceilings in all plant room areas. Elsewhere
they shall be concealed to approval.
Cables shall, as far as is practicable, be run in locations which will be accessible in the
finished installation. Where it is unavoidable to run cables in locations which will not be
visible in the finished installation, the Contractor shall provide dimensioned drawings which
clearly indicate the actual cable route.
The wiring methods used in the installation shall comply with the schedule of Wiring
Methods hereunder.
Conductors shall be of copper, and voltage class shall be 0.6/1.0 kV. The Cables shall
be installed, and terminated in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations
and all terminations and fixings shall be factory produced and approved by the
manufacturer for the particular cable used.
Installation
All cables shall be:
installed in locations/routes as specified and/or detailed on the drawings,
run always horizontal or vertical, parallel to building members clipped to
timber battens, run on cable tray or clipped to catenary wire.
free of kinks, sags etc. to give maximum neatness to finished installation,
connect to other cables only in junction boxes using approved twist connectors
(e.g. “Harstop”) to preserve double insulation throughout the entire installation.
installed on the loop-in loop-out system,
(Loop all cables only in terminals of equipment or accessories)
installed without connectors in inaccessible locations, e.g. wall cavities.
(Any cable found to contain such connectors shall be rewired at the
Contractor's cost).
installed without damage to insulation.
(Any cable found to be damaged shall be replaced at the Contractor's cost).
terminated without cutting strands and fix in lugs or approved clips when such
are necessary to prevent spread of strands when terminals are tightened.
enclosed in a suitable duct, pipe or conduit, incorporating bushed ends to
prevent damage to the cable sheath when buried directly in the ground, plaster,
concrete or similar materials.
The power cable shall be laid on hot-dip galvanized cable tray, and the surface of
fire-fighting bridge shall be fireproof treated. When the cable tray and exposed
metal pipe pass through the fire compartment, they shall be sealed with fire-
retardant and refractory materials. When the cable tray is installed horizontally,
the spacing between supports shall not be greater than 1.5m; when the cable tray
is installed vertically, the spacing between supports shall not be greater than 2m.
When the power cable is laid vertically and horizontally in the electrical shaft, the
ladder can be used for laying, and the trunking shall not pass over the shelf.
Protection of Cable
Fire resistant cables shall have test certificates (from a recognized authority) and achieve
the following performance criteria:
Fire, water and mechanical shock resistance for at least 3 hours at 950°C
according to BS 6387 (category C, W, Z)
Flame retardant according to IEC 332 Parts 1 & 3
Halogen free to IEC 754 Parts 1 & 2
Low smoke emission, non toxic
Flash point : None
Mineral insulation
Conductors shall be of copper, and voltage class shall be as noted. The cables shall
be installed and terminated in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations
and all terminations and fixings shall be factory produced and approved by the
manufacturer for the particular cable used.
An inner sheath of PVC shall then be applied which shall be surrounded with a single
layer of galvanized steel wire armoring and sheathed overall with a heavy duty, high
quality, moisture resisting PVC
All PVC armored cables shall be properly terminated in heavy, compression type,
brass glands having wedge type armor clamps to hold and anchor the steel wire
armoring. The cable glands shall be mounted rigidly to the cable support bars provided
in the switchboards etc.
Where installed within buildings these cables shall, unless otherwise specified or shown
on the drawings, be secured to the walls, ceilings, beams and columns by means of
special, heavy gauge, galvanized iron saddles or clamps and brass wood screws at
intervals not exceeding 450mm, or alternatively be secured to galvanized perforated
cable tray in an approved manner.
Vertical runs of PVC armored cables in rising ducts shall be securely saddled to
perforated cable trays or direct to the wall by means of approved saddles or cleats as
indicated on the drawings.
