Specific Objective 1: explain the concept of Information Technology

Content: Definition and scope of Information Technology; application of tools
for informational purposes

Information Technology Defined

 In the broadest sense, information technology refers to both the

hardware and software that are used to store, retrieve, and manipulate
information. At the lowest level you have the servers with an operating
system. Installed on these servers are things like database and web
serving software. The servers are connected to each other and to users
via a network infrastructure. And the users accessing these servers
have their own hardware, operating system, and software tools.

 Stands for "Information Technology," and is pronounced "I.T." It refers

to anything related to computing technology, such as networking,
hardware, software, the Internet, or the people that work with these
technologies. Many companies now have IT departments for managing
the computers, networks, and other technical areas of their
businesses. IT jobs include computer programming, network
administration, computer engineering, Web development, technical
support, and many other related occupations. Since we live in the
"information age," information technology has become a part of our
everyday lives. That means the term "IT," already highly overused, is
here to stay.

 In actuality, information technology is the use of computers and

software to manage information. In some companies, this is referred to
as Management Information Services (or MIS) or simply as Information
Services (or IS). The information technology department of a large
company would be responsible for storing information, protecting
information, processing the information, transmitting the information
as necessary, and later retrieving information as necessary.

 The development, installation, and implementation of computer

systems and applications

 Set of tools, processes, and methodologies (such as

coding/programming, data communications, data conversion, storage
and retrieval, systems analysis and design, systems control) and
associated equipment employed to collect, process, and present
information. In broad terms, IT also includes office automation,
multimedia, and telecommunications.
