Wuthering Heights, the great novel by Emily Bronte, though

not inordinately long is an amalgamation of childhood
fantasies, friendship, romance, and revenge. But this story is
not a simple story of revenge, it has more profound
implications. As Arnold Kettle, the English critic, said,"
Wuthering Heights is an expression in the imaginative terms
of art of the stresses and tensions and conflicts, personal and
spiritual, of nineteenth-century capitalist society.” The
characters of Wuthering Heights embody the extreme love
and extreme hate of the humanity.

Love, Hate and Cruelty in Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights

written by Emily Bronte, was a novel filled with many emotions and
activity. Her characters represent an on going conflict between love
and hate. Upon the publication of the book articles and reviews were
written regarding Brontes novel. Following her death some of these
were recovered such as the following written January 15 1848: " In
Wuthering Heights the reader is shocked, disgusted, almost sickened
by details of cruelty, inhumanity and the most diabolical hate and
vengeance, and anon come passages of powerful testimony to the
supreme power of love- even over demons in the human form. The
women in the book are of a strange…show more content…
The cruelties of Hindley toward Heathcliff produces vengeance.
Heathcliff feels the need to take revenge, and zeros in on Hareton
Earnshaw son to Hindley. Heathcliff's evil influence is felt upon the
boy who reflects the most insensitive traits. He turns the young
Hareton into a brute for whom has no respect or love for his father or
for his education. " He raised his missile to hurl it: I commenced a
soothing speech, but could not stay the hand-the stone struck my
bonnet; and then ensued, from the stammering lips of the little
fellow, a string of curses, which whether he comprehended them or
not, were delivered with practiced emphasis, and distorted his baby
features into a shocking expression of malignity. " (109) Heathcliffs
cruelties toward Haerton is felt throughout. He has become a

reflection of the cruelty Heathcliff hides in himself, he has done to

Haerton what Hindley did to him. In a strange sense Haerton clings to

Heathcliff, and treats him as if he was a father. The supreme power of

love is a central theme in the book. Bronte produces a love that is not
so much romantic as it is powerful. Heathcliff's evil is projected upon
everyone in the story except Catherine. Catherine had from the start
of the story had a love for Heathcliff.

A tale of passion, passionate hate, and passionate love is the novel

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, where passion can be evil, a
destructive force but that can also be a marvelous, creative force as it
forges bonds of love that can never be broken. Two opposite feelings
equalized by the strength of one's desire for another and responsible
for the misery of their absence in each other's live.
Heathcliff, as one of the main characters, develops an intense
hatred and anger that urges him to take revenge, for nothing could
have hurt him more than both the abandonment and betrayal of
Catherine Linton, his first and only true love. Catherine knew of her
strong feelings for Heathcliff yet still she married Edgar Linton
bringing upon herself an unhappiness so great that as time went by it
became unbearable.
In Heathcliff's opinion Edgar took his beloved Catherine from
him and believed he was the reason for Catherine's illness and later
her death therefore seeking revenge against him by harming his sister
Isabella instead. Another way in which he attempted to get back at
Edgar was by locking up his daughter, young Catherine, in Wuthering
Heights hoping that Edgar would die before seeing his daughter for
the last time. Heathcliff spent his whole live seeking through revenge

still flourished.

The definition for Cathy and Heathcliff's love is beyond what words
can ever express. It is beyond appearances, the materialistic world,
lust, and even virtue, but instead one only being. Cathy said:

"...I am Heathcliff – he is always in my mind – not as a

             pleasure, any more ...

Their relationship is very interesting, since they express undying love

for each other, yet have a certain bitterness towards the other. It is
very confusing to me, since I feel that if you love someone, you should
be with them. Instead, Catherine, being the shallow character she is,
married another man for his wealth and status, and then complained
about it and wanted to be with Heathcliff. However, she claimed that
she would never marry him.

Wuthering Heights portrays the effects of love taken to the extreme.

The relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine had provided hope
for a future filled with compassion and care; however, their
infatuation and desire for each other quickly developed into

something else, an insane misunderstanding and corruption what

they believe to be love. Catherine thought of “[her] love for Linton is
like the foliage in the woods: time will change it… [her] love for
Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little

visible delight, but necessary.” Catherine has proclaimed that “[she is]
Heathcliff” and that “[talking] of [their] separation... [was]
impracticable” (Bronte 82). Catherine is bold in her love for Heathcliff,
stating that it will last forever. To her, marrying another man does not
mean leaving Heathcliff, for she and he are one and the same. Their
obsession and revenge for each other took hold over all other
emotions, making their relationship revolve around themselves.
