GET READY
Think about why you want to learn Portuguese, and why that’s important to you.
Imagine what life would be like if you achieved your goal, and if you didn’t achieve it.
Strong motivation will keep you going, even when you feel like quitting (spoiler alert:
you’ll feel like quitting!).
It’s also very important to have realistic expectations when starting to learn a language.
If you start by believing it will be easy and fast, you will feel frustrated and demotivated
once you get in touch with reality. Learning a language takes a long time, and it comes
with a lot of emotional labor. If are aware of this, then you will better understand your
own progress as you move along and don’t beat yourself up (so much!).
If you exceed your expectations and learn faster, then, great! If not, don’t worry. It’s all
part of the process.
As a beginner, it’s a good idea to follow a course, a manual, a step-by-step program that
provides the structure and the sequence you need. This way, you always know what step
to take next.
Other materials that you might want are: a grammar book (for beginners), don’t get
a comprehensive grammar because it can be overwhelming; a dictionary or a basic
vocabulary book; other resources to expose yourself as much as possible to the
language (podcasts, fiction books for beginners, etc.).
Tip: don’t spend too much time choosing your materials!
Learning a language takes a great amount of time (did I mention this before?).
Depending on the level of fluency you want to reach, it can take up to 10.000 hours
(second spoiler alert: that’s several years). If you only study once a month, you are not
going to achieve your goal in this lifetime.
Also, your brain needs to be in constant contact with the language, so that it gets used
to it and actually learns it. I strongly suggest you learn every day, at least fifteen minutes,
but preferably, one hour. It’s better to learn for small chuncks each day than to learn for
three hours once a week. Be consistent and resilient and you’ll get there.

RESOURCES
In this section, you find a few resources to help you get started.
Grammar checklist
The checklist will help you keep track of your progress and highlight what you need to
review or practice further. Remember that grammar helps you have a better
understanding of how the language works, but it’s not a silver bullet that teaches you
how to speak it. Always include in your learning routine listening, reading, writing and
speaking practice.
Th3 one-page chart shows you the conjugations of all verb tenses at a glance.
Although you’ll be working with only two or three verb tenses when you start, this
chart will help you in your future learnings.
