Chapter Numbe
1 Lesson: Divisibility Rules
r
Introduction:

What is Divisibility?

When a number is divisible it means that we can split it into equal groups without any
remainder, or leftovers. For instance, if you and a friend want to share 4 cookies
equally, each of you would get 2 cookies: 4 cookies ÷ 2 people = 2 cookies per person.
As there are no remainders, or leftovers, this means that 4 is divisible by 2.

Now imagine that 2 more friends came to join you, and the 4 of you want to share the 4
cookies. Well, 4 cookies ÷ 4 people = 1 cookie for per person. As there are no
remainders, we could also say that 4 is divisible by 4.

Pre-test:

Choose 1 answer. Shade the circle.

3. Is 1340 divisibly 10?

ANALYSIS

How do we know that numbers are divisible by 2, 5, and 10?

ABSTRACTION

Divisibility rule for 2

*A number is divisible by 2 if the ones digit of the number 2,4,6,8 or 0.

Example 1 Is 238 divisible by 2?

Yes , because the ones digit, which is 8, is divisible by 2. Therefore,

238 is divisible by 2.

Example 2 860 is divisible by 2 since its one digit is 0, which is an even

number.

Divisibility rule for 5

*A number is divisible by 5 if the ones digit of the number is 0 or 5.

5|Page
Example 3 Is 660 divisible by 5?

Yes, because ones digit of the number is 0. Therefore, 660 is

divisible by 5.

Example 4 315 is divisible by 5 because its ones digit is 5.

Divisibility rule for 10

*A number is divisible by 10 if the last digit of the number is 0.

Example 5 Is 530 divisible by 10?

Yes, because 530 has a 0 in its ones digits.

Example 6 the number 81 940 is divisible by 10 because the ones digit is 0.

1. Frances has a collection of 672 stamps. She wants to place the stamps in 2
envelopes .Can she place the same number of stamps in each envelope?

2. The number of books in Karla’s collection is divisible by 2,5 and 10. She has

ANALYSIS

How do we know that numbers are divisible by 3, 6, and 9?

ABSTRACTION

Divisibility rule for 3

*A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of all the digits is divisible by 3.

Example 1 Is 342 divisible by 3?

Solution: 3+4+2=9 (add all the digits)

9÷3=3 (divide the sum by 3)

Therefore, 342 is divisible by 3 because the sum of all the digits

which is 9 is divisible by 3. To check, 342 divided by 3 is 114.

9|Page
Example 2 Is 561 divisible by 3?

Solution: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12 Checked: 651 ÷ 3 = 187

12 ÷ 3 = 4

Therefore, 561 is divisible by 3.

Divisible rule for 6

*If a number is divisible both by 2 and 3, then it is divisible by 6.

Example 3 Is 126 divisible by 6?

Solution: 126 is even number since its ones digit, 6 is even

1 + 2+ 6 = 9 (add all the digits)

9÷3=3 (divide the sum by 3)

Since 126 is divisible by both 2 and 3, then 126 is also divisible

by 6

Example 4 Is 176 divisible by 6?

Solution: 176 is an even number since its ones digit, 6 is even

1 + 7 + 6 = 14 (add all the digits)

14 ÷ 3, is not divisible by 3

Therefore, 176 is not divisible by 6

Divisible rules for 9

*A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of all the digits is divisible by 9.

Example 5 Is 126 divisible by 9?

Solution : 1 + 2 + 6 = 9 (add all the digits)

9÷9=1 (divide the sum by 9)

Therefore, 126 is divisible by 9.
