1. GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1. Scope:
These criteria cover the structural design basis of structural steel and glass
works for the Giorgio Armani Store at ION located at Singapore.

1.2. Units of Measurement:


Unit of measurement for design calculation are in S.I. system, unless otherwise
noted.

1.3. Codes and Standards:


Except as modified by governing codes and by this specification, design and
construction shall comply with the applicable provisions and recommendations of

3. DESIGN LOADINGS

3.1. Self weight of structure, SW:


Self weight can be generated by computer software automatically based on
components’ dimensions and material’s densities.

3.2. Dead Load, DL:


Dead loads can be derived based on components’ dimensions and materials’
densities shown in table 1;

3.5. Load Combination:


All structural elements shall be designed for the following load combination
whichever produces the most unfavourable effect.
3.5.1. For Steel: Load and Resistance Factor Design.
According to BS 5950: Part 1: 2000, the following principal combinations of
loads are taken into account:
1. 1.4DL + 1.4WL
3.5.2. For Aluminium: Limit State Design.
According to BS 8110: Part 1: 1991, the following principal combinations of
loads are taken into account:
1. 1.2DL + 1.2WL
3.5.3. Serviceability Limit State Design.
Design load to resist dead load only shall be: DL
If resistance to specified wind load is included in the design, the additional
load combinations shall be: DL + WL

4. DEFLECTION LIMIT

4.1. Framing member:


Deflection perpendicular to the plane of cladding shall not exceed Span/240 or
20mm. whichever is lesser.

4.2. Glass panels:


Deflection perpendicular to the plane of panel shall not exceed Span/90 or
20mm. whichever is lesser.

4.3. Metal panels:


Deflection perpendicular to the plane of panel shall not exceed Span/90 or
20mm. whichever is lesser.

5. STRUCTURAL MODELS

5.1. Computer Programme:


STAAD PRO. analysis software is used to model and analysis the glass
panel and steel frame respectively.

Panel Size = 0.8m x 1.42m.
Supporting Method = #8 Screw fixation @spacing 100mm.

Allowable Stress; σall. = 105 MPa.


Hence, σmax < σall OK.

Maximum Deflection; Δmax = 3.9 mm.


Allowable Deflection; Δall = 800/90
= 8.9 mm.
Hence, Δmax < Δall OK.

Conclusion:

The maximum allowable deflection for metal panel is 800/90 = 8.9mm; which is more
than the actual deflection of 3.9mm, hence OK.
While the maximum actual stress found to be 16.7 MPa; which is less than be the
allowable stress of 105 MPa, hence OK.

8.1. Verification of Screws

The aluminium solid panel is fixed with the stainless steel screws #8 (at
least s/s 304 grade), fixing at every 100mm centres

From the analysis the ultimate maximum reaction forces to the screw
fixation are:

FRS = 2.400 kN (resultant shear force from in X & Y-direction)


FZ = 0.045 kN (pull out of screw from wind load)

Hence, screws #8 at spacing 100mm. are adequate.

= 0.138 MPa.

Sealant bite for vertical


Tension load, Tn = (Pz x b) / 2
= (1 x 1.6) / 2
= 0.8 kN.
Required sealant bite, tbite(ver) = Tn / Rw
= 0.80 / 0.138
= 5.8 mm.

Sealant bite for horizontal


Tension load, Tn = (Pz x a) / 2
= (1 x 4.3) / 2
= 2.15 kN.
Required sealant bite, tbite(hor) = Tn / Rw
= 2.15 / 0.138
= 15.6 mm

Maximum sealant bite, tbite(max) = Max(tbite(ver), tbite(hor))


= Max(5.8, 15.6)
= 15.6 mm.
Actual sealant bite, tbite(actual) = 16 mm.

Hence, a 16mm. sealant bite is structurally adequate
