CM 654 CONSTRUCTION QUALITY MANAGEMENT
2nd Semester, SY. 2018-2019
Rationale:
This course provides a general foundation in construction quality management such as concepts and
principles, quality management planning, quality assurance, quality control, and quality improvement.
Course Description:
The subject provides the students an understanding of how important the construction quality
management is for the successful execution of capital projects. The subject covers the processes involve
in quality management as defined in the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge 5 th Edition)
which are Plan quality management, perform quality assurance and control quality control together with
the necessary inputs, tools & techniques and output of each processes. This subject will cover also
discussions on ISO 9001, which is the standard framework for Quality Management System.
Apart from that, the subject will cover also topics related to actual implementation of quality
management system in construction. This includes Method of Statement for each work, Inspection and
Test Plan and Risk Assessment / Job Hazard Analysis.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
1. Discuss the processes involved in quality management, its inputs, tools & techniques and
outputs.
2. Create a Quality Management Plan intended for Construction Projects.
3. Discuss & Explain the principles & concept of ISO 9001
4. Create a Method of Statement for a specific construction activity. This includes the Inspection
Test Plan and its Risk Assessment / Job Hazard Analysis.

A. Written Reports
1. Discuss about Total Quality Management, its definition, historical development and
methods.
2. Discuss what is Six Sigma, its definition, methodologies and applications in construction.
3. Prepare a Method of Statement for any major activity in construction such as Cast in Place
Reinforced Concrete Works, Steel Structural Works, Piling Works, Pre-Cast Reinforced
Concrete Works, Waterproofing Works, Roofing Works, etc. Included in the Method of
Statement are the Inspection Test Plan, Quality Checklist and Risk Assessment/Job Hazard
Analysis.
4. Assume that you have your own construction company (License A Category) and you
wanted to get an ISO 9001 Certification, prepare a Quality Management Plan. This Plan
should cover all aspect required in ISO 9001.
