This document provides instructions for analyzing the moment capacity of beams in a one-way slab and joist floor system. Students are asked to calculate the nominal moment capacity, Mn, of:
1) One of the interior T-beams, given beam parameters including spacing, depth, and rebar size and grade.
2) Another interior T-beam, given different spacing, depth, and rebar parameters.
3) The spandrel beam, using the same parameters as the first interior beam except for a different stem width. Sketches of cross sections and stress profiles are recommended.

A) The one-way slab-and-joist system shown above can be analyzed as a series of
T-beams. Given S = 7 ft, hf = 4 in., As = 8-#6 bars (Grade 60), and d = 17.00 in., calculate the nominal moment capacity, Mn, of one of the interior T-beams. B) Repeat Part A given S = 4 ft, hf = 3.5 in., As = 6-#10 bars (Grade 60), and d = 16.36 in. C) For the floor system shown above, calculate the nominal moment capacity, Mn, of the spandrel beam. Use all parameters as defined in Part A. Note that the stem width of the spandrel L-beam is different from those of the interior beams. Note: S is center-to-center spacing of joists. Good sketches of your T-beam cross sections along with strain and stress profiles will help you considerably in solving these problems.
