New Screw Compressor Element Priority: IV ECB AII0130

PGC: 455 Date: 16/04/2003

1. Subject
A complete new design for the oil injected screw element has been introduced with the aim to increase
F.A.D. ( Free Air Delivery ) from 2 to 4 % and reducing the S.E.R. ( Specific Energy Requirement )
from 3 to 5% . Detailed figures can be found in the updated AML‘s .

The new compressor element has the internal designation “ C146 “, in which “146 “ stands for the
centre distance between the two rotors expressed in mm. This new compressor element will be applied
on the ranges GA 55 – 75 – 90C and GA 75 –90 VSD , superseding the compressor element “Size
1.5 L” .

2. Modifications
- In the first place the ratio between the rotor length and rotor diameter have been changed for reasons
of optimisation. This makes the external dimensions quite different compared to the former size 1.5
element which has its impact on the build in .

- Secondly the element is driven at the male rotor outlet side whereas the former one was driven at the
inlet side ( see page 5 ). As a consequence the shaft seal is now installed at the outlet side. New shaft
seal kits have been released depending whether it concerns a Direct Drive (DD) or Gearbox Driven
variant . See also updated spare parts lists for part numbers. The shaft seal will be delivered mounted
in its cover which eliminates the use of special tools and avoiding incorrect handling in the field .

- Oil injection channels are all internally which excludes the use of external plugs and possible oil leaks.
It also explains why the rotor casing is split in the middle as the oil channels are in the moulding of one
of the flanges.

- The air intake flange of the new screw element is larger in order to reduce the restriction . For this
reason the bottom flange of the unloader on GA 55-90c range respectively the flange of the inlet valve
on GA 75-90 VSD has been adapted to match these new dimensions !

- As the new element is more efficient , we took the opportunity to adapt the gear ratio’s which means
new gears for the complete range .

- The shape of the gearbox / coupling housing needed adaptation to match the shape of the new
compressor element .

- The oil stop valve and element outlet check valve have been integrated in one single housing similar
like on GA 30 VSD .

- Due to the different position of the compressor element inlet and outlet side, the delivery flexible
between element outlet and air receiver/oil separator tank is new . Also the scavenge line is at a
different location .

- As quite a number of items have been changed since the introduction of the new element several
service kits like preventive maintenance kits , element overhaul kit as well as element mounting kit
have been affected . Some kits are completely new , other existing kits have been expanded with
some O-rings to make them suitable for both versions . Consult the relevant spare parts list where the
service kits have been summarized.

- Despite the new compressor element the converter parameters in GA75-90 VSD have not been
changed. There is also no impact on the Elektronikon II files .

- Service intervals , Service Plan and expected lifetimes are not influenced.

3. Interchangeability
- The new compressor element has part number 1616 7146 90 .
It is not interchangeable with the previous model which remains available as service stage.
- Shaft seals of old and new design are not interchangeable.
- The unloader / inlet valve is not interchangeable due its different hole pattern in the bottom flange.
- The gearcasing / coupling housing is not interchangeable.

=> Watch the serial number of the compressor and apply the proper spare parts book as the above
summing up is not complete.

4. Introduction date
The new screw compressor element has been introduced in the current production since mid April
2003 . A new serial number range has been choosen :

- GA 55-75-90C : From AII 478 000 onwards

- GA 75-90 VSD : From AII 495 500 onwards
