Draw Goblet Tutorial

You can create quickly in ViaCAD, combining 2D and 3D drawing methods. In this
tutorial, you’ll create a 2D goblet profile, then use 3D tools to create a full, 3D goblet.

To draw a 2D goblet model


1. From the Help menu, open the drawing file associated with this tutorial.
2. Be sure the Main Tool Palette is set to the 2D drawing tools. 2D should be
highlighted.

3. On the Main Tool Palette, click the Single Line tool.


4. On the workspace, click to start the line and drag your cursor straight up the
workspace.

5. Click to draw the line.

6. At that line’s top endpoint, click to start another line.


7. Drag horizontally, to the right, and click to draw the line. We’re creating the 2D
profile for our goblet.

8. On the Main Tool Palette, click the Interpolate Spline tool.

9. Position your cursor on the right endpoint of the horizontal line and click to set the
first point.

10. Drag down, about a third of the way, and click to set the second point.

11. Drag down and to the left and click to set the next point. Notice the line segments
are taking on the shapes of curves.

12. Drag straight down and click to set the next point. Notice the LogiCursor is guiding
us to the points we’re clicking, as we create.

13. Position your cursor on the first line’s start point and hold it there to set the point as
a reference point for alignment.

14. Drag to find the intersection of the two points.

15. Click to place the point and draw the curve.

16. Click the Single Line tool.

17. Draw a line from the origin to the last endpoint of the spline.

To reshape using control points


1. On the Main Tool Palette, click the Selection tool.
2. Click to select the curve.
3. From the Edit menu, choose Show Points. Control points appear.
4. Deselect the curve, then select the lowest possible point.

5. Drag the point to the left so it’s straight, vertically.
6. Select the curve again.
7. From the Edit menu, choose Show Points to hide the points.
8. Drag a selection window around the entire shape.
9. On the Main Tool Palette, click the Go To 3D button. The 3D Tool Palette appears.
10. From the Solid From Profiles toolset, click the Lathe Solid tool.
11. Position your cursor on the straight vertical profile line and click to create the
goblet.

To hollow out a goblet
1. From the Pan toolset, choose the Dynamic Rotate tool.
2. Drag to rotate the goblet just a bit, so you can see the top.

3. From the Solid Features toolset, click the Shell Feature tool.
4. Position your cursor on the top of the goblet.
5. Click the top of the goblet and choose the top face to hollow out the inside.

6. Use the Dynamic Rotate tool to rotate the goblet so you have a better view of the
inside. You can still see the 2D profile used to create the goblet.
7. Right-click on the workspace to display the shortcut menu.

8. Choose Show Only to turn off the 2D profile used to create the shape.

 From the Help menu, choose Tutorials > Draw Goblet Tutorial > Model. This
tutorial drawing will give you insight as to how we achieved this so you can practice
it on your own.

To access tutorials
1. From the Help menu, choose Tutorials.
2. From the submenu, choose a title, then select Video, Step-by-Step, or Model.
