Hyperbola

Question 1:
Derive the equation of a hyperbola from its definition: for any point 𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦) on
the curve of the hyperbola, the absolute difference of the distances from 𝑃 to
focal points (−𝑐, 0) and (𝑐, 0) is constant (𝑑2 − 𝑑1 = 2𝑎).

𝑥2 𝑦2
− =1
𝑎2 𝑏 2

Also find the equation of asymptotes.

Question 2:
Another way of defining a hyperbola is using the concept of eccentricity and
directrix. Eccentricity is the ratio of the distance from the centre to a focus
over the distance from the centre to a vertex.
Can you find the formula for eccentricity?

Research into the concept of conic sections.
