It seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. We recognize, said the member states,
that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the
greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.

The 3 real combination in Sustainable Development Goal that was mentioned in the video are
resetting the direction of the world economy, social exclusion and sustainable environment.

Lesson 2
1. True or False: Goal-based development provides a shared direct that orients the behavior of
governments, businesses, researchers, and citizens to move society forward.

In my own opinion its True, Goal-based development is a clearer set of goals that provides a
shared direct orients in the behavior of governments, businesses, researchers, and citizens to
move society forward. Why I agree with President John F. Kennedy, by making it more simple
and understandable, it will really help all people to see, to encourage hope and the willingness to
move towards it.

2. What three major multilateral environmental agreements were adopted at the Rio Earth
Summit in 1992?

The 3 main multilateral agreements on environment were agreed during the Earth Summit, held
in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. The 3 conventions are:
• The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
• The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
• The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

The European Community is a Party to the three conventions. Therefore, the EC is legally
committed to take the conventions into consideration while designing and implementing the
community policies and strategies – including the community development and cooperation
activities.

The Objectives of the 3 conventions

Biodiversity Convention
* To conserve biological diversity
* To use biological diversity in a sustainable fashion
* To share the benefits of biological diversity fairly and equitably

Climate Change Convention

*To achieve stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that
would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

Desertification Convention
*To combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought, particularly in Africa, through
effective action at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership
arrangements, in the framework of an integrated approach, with a view to contributing to the
achievement of sustainable development in affected areas.
