Aims of La Solidaridad

In 1888 Filipino expatriate journalist Graciano López Jaena founded the
newspaper La Solidaridad in Barcelona. Throughout its course, La Solidaridad
urged reforms in both religion and government in the Philippines, and it served
as the voice of what became known as the Propaganda Movement.

2. Context
 La solidaridad created in Spain on December 13, 1888. which was
published in Barcelona, Spain on February 15, 1889. It was edited by
Graciano López Jaena and later on by Marcelo H. del Pilar.

3. Intended audience
 The La Solidaridad is composed of filipino Liberals exiled in 1872 and
students attending Europe's univerisities.

4. Purposes for the document’s creation


 La Solidaridad was established to express the goal of the Propaganda
Movement towards achieving assimilation with Spain.
5. Type of document
 La Solidaridad (The Solidarity) issued a newspaper of the same name,
The newspaper published not only articles and essays about the
economic, cultural, political, and social conditions of the country, but
also current news, both local and foreign, and speeches of prominent
Spanish leaders about the Philippines.
6. Main points expressed in the document General message of the document
 It took the prestige of Rizal and the political wisdom of del Pilar to unite
the Filipinos in Spain and to coordinate their efforts.
7. Significance
 La solidaridad is importantto guarantee of basic freedoms of speech
and association; and equal opportunity for Filipinos and Spanish to
enter government service. to "awaken the sleeping intellect of the
Spaniard to the needs of our country" and to create a closer, more
equal association of the islands and the motherland. Among their
specific goals were representation of the Philippines in the Cortes, or
Spanish parliament secularization of the clergy; legalization of Spanish
and Filipino equality; creation of a public school system independent of
the friars; abolition of the polo (labor service) and vandala (forced sale
of local products to the government)
