( ECIV 5324) Midterm Exam Dr.Fahid Rabah.
Time allowed: 1hr: 45 min Open Book Exam

Solve the following 4 problems:

1. The results of Laboratory analysis for water containing glucose (C6H12O6) dissolved to
a concentration of 120 mg/L were given to you as follows:
COD = 132 mg/L, BOD5 = 100 mg/L, TOC = 30 mg/L. Which of these results is
accepted if the allowable experimental error is ± 5%? If not acceptable, what should
the acceptable results range be for each parameter? Assume that the BOD5 reaction
rate constant (k) = 0.23 d-1.

2. A batch reactor is to be used to remove organic matter from an industrial wastewater

having an initial COD concentration of 300 mgCOD/L. What is the concentration of
COD in the reactor after 2 hrs given the following data:
mgMLSS
µ m = 2.0 d-1, Y = 0.50 , K s = 100 mgCOD/L, X = 2000 mg MLSS/L
mgCOD

3. A conventional activated sludge system is operated at the following conditions:
X = 3000 mg MLSS/L , Qin = 10000 m3/d , Qr = 15000 m3/d biological reactor volume
(V) = 650 m3, Qw = 40 m3/d, θc = 3 days. Determine the following:
a. Show by calculations that sludge settling efficiency is not accepted in this system.
b. Calculate the concentration of suspended solids in the effluent.

4. A consultant engineer designed an activated sludge aeration tank for BOD5 removal
and gave you his design summary as follows:
• Qin = 15000 m3/d, X = 3200 mgVSS/L, reactor volume (V) = 2500 m3, θc = 5 days, S0
= 280 mgBOD5/L, S = 13 mgBOD5/L.
Hetrotrophic bacteria growth constants:
Y = 0.50 mgVSS/mgBOD5, Ks = 100 mgBOD5/L, μm = 2.5 d-1, kd = 0.05 d-1
a. The designer claims that nitrification can also be achieved in the same tank,
is he correct? Explain your answer by calculations.
b. If nitrification is not possible in this tank, what are the changes that you have to make
to the existing design to make nitrification possible? Explain your answer by
calculations.
Given data :
• Nitrifiers growth constants :
Yn = 0.30 mgVSS/mgNH4+-N , Kn = 0.70 mgNH4+-N/L, μmn = 0.27 d-1, kdn = 0.03 d-1
• Influent ammonia to the aeration tank (N0) = 34 mgNH4+-N/L
• Required effluent ammonia (N) = 1.0 mgNH4+-N/L
( Hent: Keep X = 3200 mgVSS/L)
