TRANSCRIPT – ANALYSIS (PART 3)

1.
M: Would you like me to weigh that on a scale for you?
W: Yes, and could I also have some stamps as well? I'd also like to send this letter to Toronto,
Canada.
M: Of course. The total comes to $9.50 and your letter and package will go out before noon today.
W: Thank you. And could you tell me how long it will take for the package to get there?
2.
M: I'd like a non-smoking room with a view of the lake, please.
W: I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Brown, but we only have suites facing the lake right now and they're
much more expensive. However, we do have rooms facing the park or the city. Would you care to
take either one of these rooms?
M: All right. I'll take the room facing the city. Now, could you tell me what time your restaurant
opens in the morning? I have an early meeting with a client tomorrow and I would like to have
breakfast before I take off to meet him.
W: I don't think you will have any problems with that. Our restaurant opens at 5 a.m.
3.
M1: John, I've decided not to take my car into George's Garage today.
M2: Why David? I thought you said they did a great job on your car the last time you had a
problem with it.
M1: I know, but I found a better place near my house. And it's cheaper, too.
M2: Really? I need to get my car serviced soon. Maybe I should take mine there as well. Let, me
know how good of a job they do after you get your car fixed
4.
W: Jim, how is your new apartment?
M: I really like it. It's really spacious and the rent is very reasonable.
W: That's great. When are you going to invite me to see your new place?
M: Well, I was thinking of asking some people over this Friday but my brother got these free
tickets to the basketball game.
5.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

W: I see that you are done with your meal. Could I take these dishes away?
M: Yes, thank you. And could I take a look at your menu again? I'd like something for take-out.
W: Of course. I'll be right back with the menu.
M: Oh, never mind. I'll just get the cheeseburger with fries to go, please.
6.
W1: Susan, have you put much thought into what kind of food we should serve at the company
party this year?
W2: Well, the catering company we used at our last party did a wonderful job with the selection
of food they served. Why don't we use them again and let them handle the entire thing?
W1: Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Can you call them and make the necessary arrangements
then?
W2: Sure, I will take care of it right away.
7.
M: I can't believe we got the wrong order. We are going to have to send these boxes back.
W: It's too late now. All the delivery people have gone home for the day. Why don't we just send
them back first thing in the morning?
M: Well, I guess we have no choice but to do that. I just hope we will receive the right order soon
enough to repackage everything and have them delivered to our stores by next Monday.
W: Don't worry, Shawn. We have plenty of time. Plus, we always have the weekend if we run out
of time.
8.
M: So, who is going to head the new department?
W: The job went to Ms. Williams.
M: Really? I thought Mr. Wong and Ms.Newman were being considered. I wonder why Mr.Smith
went with Ms. Williams.
W: Well, it's probably because she has more work experience.
9.
M: This is your room key and this is a complimentary breakfast coupon you can use in our
restaurant in the morning.
W: Thank you very much. Could you also tell me how often your shuttle bus to the airport runs?
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M: The bus leaves here every ten minutes.

W: Thank you. I'd like these bags sent up to my room now, please.
10.
W: We're done here for the day. If you're going home I could drop you off at a nearby subway
station.
M: Actually, I need to go back to the office to pick up a file for a meeting I have with Mr.
Curtis first thing tomorrow morning. I will be going straight to his office before I come in
tomorrow.
W: Ah yes, I forgot. You're going there to try to land the contract, right?
M: Yes, I've been working really hard for the last two months and if everything goes well, I might
be able to close the deal tomorrow.

PART 3: 3 SPEAKERS

1.
M-Au All right, 471et's start the meeting. How were our clothing sales for June?
W-Br Well, sales went up three percent from last month. But customers didn't respond as well as
usual to our big semiannual sale.
M-Au I was hoping for a five percent increase... Donna, why do you think the increase was so
small?
W-Am I think clothing sales weren't as strong because the advertising budget was cut this year.
I'd like to see that money put back into our budget.
M-Au Hmm ... Let's wait another month. If sales are still low, we may have to increase the
advertising budget, but I prefer to wait on that decision.
2.
W-Am Welcome to the Westfield Hotel! I'm the event coordinator, and this is my associate,
Diane. So, you'd like to host an event here?
M-Au Yes! I work for the National Journalists Association. We're planning our annual awards
banquet for June-for about a hundred guests.
W-Br Well, we have a beautiful ballroom on this floor that I can show you. It's been used for
awards ceremonies before.
M-Au Okay. Also, about half of our guests will be coming from out of town. Do you have enough
rooms available for them to stay here?
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

W-Am I'm sure we do, but we'll check and send you a quote for a group rate.
W-Br And additionally, we do offer free shuttle service to and from the airport.
3.
W-Br OK, Mr. Patel. Did the doctor want you to make another appointment?
M-Cn Yes, but I'll have to check my work calendar.
W-Br You can now make appointments on our Web site if you have an account. Just log on and
view available times online.
M-Cn Great. How do I sign up for an account?
W-Br Colin handles all registrations. Colin, can you help Mr. Patel set up a patient account on our
Web site?
M-Au Certainly. If you have a smart phone, we can do it now. Or I can give you a handout with
instructions to set up your account later.
M-Cn I’ll set it up later.
M-Au OK. Here's the handout. Please call with any questions.
4.
W-Am Thanks for stopping by, Vincent and Sanjay. The board of directors decided to purchase
new security cameras, so someone from Menovar Technologies is coming tomorrow to deliver
and install them.
M-Cn It'll be good to have the latest equipment.
W-Am I agree. So Vincent, I'll need some of your Maintenance Department staff to help with the
installation.
M-Cn No problem. I'll send two people over to assist.
W-Am Thanks.
M-Au Will there be a training session for my security personnel to use the new camera system?
W-Am Yes, Sanjay-Menovar Technologies suggested next Monday for the training. Is that OK
for your team?
M-Au Sure. How about ten o'clock?
W-Am I'll e-mail Menovar right away to see if that works for them.

5.
W-Br Hello, welcome to the Klineston Hotel. How can I help you?
M-Au Hi, I'm Kris Wattana from Trouville Development Corporation. 351reserved your large
meeting room for this afternoon. My colleague and I want to get everything in order before the
three o'clock start time.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

W-Br Ah yes. I see your name right here. I’ll just need to see some identification, please.
M -Au All right... here's my 10. Is that all?
W-Am Wait, Kris. Don't forget that we reserved fifty chairs, but we're going to need more.
M-Au Thanks for the reminder. Would it be possible to have fifteen more chairs brought to the
meeting room?
W-Br Absolutely. I'll call maintenance and ask them to deliver the chairs right away.
6.
M-Au Hi, Tricia . Hi, Allison . How are the training materials for the summer interns coming
along? They'll be starting in two weeks, so I'd like to see the materials by Friday.
W-Am Sure, no problem. By the way, Allison revised the section about the interns' work hours so
it's easier for the interns to understand.
M-Au Thanks, Allison . There were some questions last year about interns' schedules. It 'll be
good to have everything stated clearly this time.
W-Br Yes, and I also added more information explaining the kinds of software products the
interns will be working on.
M-Au Terrific. We've got some great projects planned, and I'm glad you prepared everything so
carefully.
7.
W-Am Hi, Dorota. Markus and I wanted to stop by to welcome you to Emmerson BioTech. We
interviewed a lot of chemistry majors for this summer internship, and you were our top pick.
M-Au And while we're here, I can show you how to fill out the time sheets that you'll have to turn
in to Payroll at the end of every week. Do you have time to go over that now?
W-Br Well, I'm supposed to go to the main laboratory in a few minutes for an overview of the
experiments that I'll be working on this summer.
W-Am Oh, sorry. We should have mentioned this sooner. The lab is closed for cleaning today, so
your lab orientation has been postponed until tomorrow.
8.
M-Au Susan, thanks for watching us practice our presentation about this new marketing
campaign.
M-Cn Yes, we really appreciate it. Now that we've finished, do you have any comments? 57We're
showing it to our client next week, so your feedback will be really helpful.
W-Br I'd emphasize more how you intend to reach a larger and more diverse customer base with
this marketing campaign.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M-Au Well, we are planning to use social media to reach younger people. Do you think that
should be included in the presentation?
W-Br Absolutely. The client will like that.
M-Cn We'll get back to work then. But if you are free tomorrow, I'd like us to meet one more
time to go over our revisions.

PART 3- CHARTS

1.
M-Cn Mary? I'm working on the bill for one of Dr. Singh's patients, and I keep getting an error
message for the code I'm using...
W-Am Oh! The billing codes recently changed. You must be referring to the old list.
M-Cn Do you have the updated one?
W-Am Yes, right here. Which procedure is it?
M-Cn A blood test.
W-Am All right... Here's the code you should use.
M-Cn Thanks! Could I get a copy of that list?
W-Am Sure. But I heard they'll be adding the codes to our billing software soon, so we won't
need to deal with paper lists anymore.
2.
W-Br Hi, Mr. Foster. This is Kasumi Ito, the hiring manager at Silverby Industries. We've
reviewed your job application and would like you to come in for an interview. Are you available
Tuesday at 2 P.M. next week?
M-Cn Thanks for getting back to me. Let me check my calendar… Yes, I can do that.
W-Br Good. Now, Silverby Industries is in a business complex. Our building is on Tinley
Avenue, and we're right next to the lake.
M-Cn Thanks. And am I able to park anywhere, or will I need a permit?
W-Br Just make sure you're in a space marked Visitor, and you won't get a parking violation.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

3.
W-Br Hi Raymond . It's Marta Dunmore. I'm calling about the wood options we
discussed for my new kitchen floor.
M-Cn Great! What did you decide?
W-Br Well, I thought about choosing the dark pine. But then 621took the samples you gave me
into the kitchen and looked at them carefully. I decided the pattern on the oak will look best.
M-Cn Oak is a great choice. It's harder than pine, so it's a good value. And the light color of the
ash and maple don't really match your kitchen.
W-Br OK, great. When can you start the installation?
M-Cn I have to check my calendar when I get back to the office. Can I give you a call later?
4.
M-Au I think the restaurant's going to get some nice publicity by being in the community festival
this weekend. It'll be a great way to get customers interested in our food.
W-Am It's definitely good advertising. Aren't you working the first day of the festival?
M-Au Yeah-but if the event gets rained out and is held at a later date, I won't be able to work it
because I'll be on holiday. Luckily, the weather this weekend should be warm and sunny, so I plan
to be at the festival's opening day. How about you?
W-Am I'm not scheduled to work for the restaurant, but I’ll be there helping a friend. She has a
small jewelry shop and needs a hand with her booth.
5.
W-Am Hi, Haruto, Have you picked the caterer for the shareholders' meeting? We want
everything to go smoothly.
M-Cn I haven't decided yet, but I've got quotes from a few local caterers. Our budget's pretty tight
so I'm leaning toward Star Restaurant. They have the least expensive lunch service.
W-Am You know... I've had problems with Star Restaurant. I hired them to cater a meal for a
management meeting last month, and they delivered the food an hour late. I just don't want a delay
like that to happen during this meeting. You can spend a little more money if you need to.
M-Cn Oh, I'm so glad you told me. Then let's go with Golden Eagle.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

6.
W-Am Next, Let's discuss our spring hiring plan. In the past we've been successful by recruiting
at university career fairs. But, I’d like to do something different this time.
M-Au Really? Why's that?
W-Am Well, our employees spend so much time traveling to different universities that they fall
behind on other important projects.
M-Au Good point. We could put more of our resources into our second most effective recruiting
method. Actually, more than a quarter of our employees were recruited that way.
W-Am That's exactly what I was thinking. Would you set up a meeting with Yukiko in public
relations and explore possibilities for expanding last year's campaign?
7.
M-Cn We're getting close to the airport, so we'd better stop to put gas in the car. The rental
company will charge us an extra fee for fuel if they have to do it.
W-Br Good idea. We don't want to pay more than we have to.
M-Cn OK, Should I take this exit then?
W-Br No, that's a rest area. Keep going, we want the next exit.
M-Cn Oh good, and I hope they also sell food. Then we can pick up some snacks for the plane
while we're there.
8.
M-Au Anita, take a look at this travel Web site. Our hotel received some bad reviews - here's one
of them .
W-Br Wow, there are definitely areas we need to work on. With a review like that, I'm worried
we won't attract as many customers.
M-Au Well, at least 66we're renovating the rooms soon, so their appearance will improve.
W-Br True. But let's discuss the other low rating at our next staff meeting.
M-Au You know, maybe we should bring in a consultant to give us advice on how to deal with
this-we certainly don't want any more bad reviews.
9.
W-Am Welcome to Woodford Electronics! How may I help you?
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M-Au Well, I purchased this digital camera yesterday from your store-but when I try to preview
the photos I've taken, an error code displays on the screen.
W-Am Really? Let me take a look. I have a chart here of all the codes, perhaps it'll tell us what's
going on ... ah, I see. According to the chart, the camera doesn't have enough battery power to
preview the photos.
M-Au Oh. Do I need to buy a new battery?
W-Am Well, let me give you a new one for free, since you just bought the camera from us
yesterday.
10.
M-Au Jin-Hee, the company's closing the parking area in front of our research lab for
construction next month. Can you send an e-mail to tell the rest of the team?
W-Br Yeah, sure. Did they decide where everyone should park in the mean time?
M-Au We're supposed to use the west parking area 'till the construction's finished.
W-Br That's quite a long walk from our lab. When the weather's bad, the roads around here can
get really icy.
M-Au Don't worry. The company's providing shuttles from the parking area to our lab. Could you
add that to the e-mail as well?

PART 4 – CHARTS
1.
W-Am And now, an event we've all been waiting for since last year -Danville's Annual Cook-Off.
Held outside at City Park, the Cook-Off always attracts a lot of participants. Competitors prepare
one dish, which they serve throughout the day. A panel of judges will select the winners based on
taste, presentation, and uniqueness. This event is great fun for the whole family, and entry and
food samples are free! If you're interested in participating, the contest registration form is
available on the city's Web site. Now, keep in mind we're expecting a cloudy day for this year's
event. We won't see any sunshine, so be sure to bring a jacket!
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

2.
M-Cn This is Seung-ho Park from Park Investors. We met last month at the Westside Technology
Conference. I attended your interesting presentation and spoke to you afterward about my small
investment firm. I'm calling because I'd like to hire you to discuss ways to make my company's
database more secure. I know you specialize in this type of work, and I'm hoping you'll be
interested in this project. Could you please e-mail me a list of your consultant fees? Use the e-mail
address on the business card I gave you. Thanks.
3.
M-Au Attention all passengers on Flight WA15. Due to inclement weather, this flight has been
canceled. We're very sorry for the inconvenience. In order to assist you in making alternative
travel arrangements, we'll be calling passengers up to the counter according to your boarding zone
numbers. Please take out your boarding passes and look at the zone number you have been
assigned. Approach the counter only when we call the group w ith your zone number. In just a
few moments, we will begin unloading your luggage.
Please listen for a separate announcement about where to retrieve your bags. Thank you for your
patience and cooperation.
4.
W-Br Last week I went to the yearly retreat for Kierson Bookstore managers. The good news
coming out of that meeting concerns money. Each store in the chain will have an increased budget
next year to spend on expanding one of the sections in their store. After I returned, I took an
informal survey about what kind of books customers would like us to carry more of. As you can
see from the chart, it's clear which one they like the best. And the art section will need to be
reduced, unfortunately. That inventory has become too expensive to stock.
5.
M-Cn Hello, this is Fred Capo, from Member Relations at Greenwood Gym. I just wanted to
thank you for participating in our member survey. Everyone who completed a survey will receive
a five dollar voucher, which can be used for any class fees or in our cafe. I've already sent it to
your e-mail. Also, looking at your feedback, I see that you've given very high ratings overall for
our gym.
Thank you! 97For the category that you gave five stars to, I'd like to ask you a few more
questions. If you have time, please give me a call back at 555-0184.
6.
M-Au welcome to today's class on small business start-ups. We'll be talking about designing a
logo that represents the company you're creating. It's how customers will identify you, so the first
thing you should do is consider the message you want to communicate. Please take a look at the
handout in front of you. We'll talk about each of the features, but let's begin by looking at the
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

phrase, "Creative advertising at your fingertips': The function of this part of the logo is to tell
customers what the company is all about. Now, try to come up with phrases that might work for
your own business-you'll find some paper and pens in your packets.
7.
M-Cn Hello everyone, I hope you've enjoyed the session s so far at this year's convention on
video-game development. Our video game association is proud to include many notable presenters
today for amateur game developers like you. I have one change to announce for this afternoon.
Unfortunately, due to illness Ms. Naoko Ito can't join us today. So, Mr. Jun Lee will substitute for
Ms. Ito. He'll give a tutorial on designing platform software that can be used to create many
different games. Also, don't forget to submit your feedback forms by the end of the day. All those
who turn in forms will automatically be entered in a contest for a tablet computer!
8.
W-Am Good morning. I called this staff meeting to discuss the reorganization of our warehouse.
On average, each of you spends five minutes finding the products you need to complete an order
for shipment. But, I think we can get that number down by making the most popular items easier
to find. Here's a map of the warehouse. I've added some new shelving units between the order
station and the employee lounge. That's where we'll place our high-demand products. Now, I'll
need some people to help rearrange the inventory. So, If you're willing to work a few extra hours,
please add your name to the sign-up sheet in my office.
9.
W-Am Good evening, this is Channel 11 News. Today, Mayor Goldberg held a press conference
to announce plans to repair damaged roads in the city. The mayor said the project will begin next
month, and Smith Road will be the first road closed. There will be detour signs posted, but please
be aware that no one will be able to access Smith Road for at least two weeks. The mayor also
announced that at least 100 new workers would be hired to complete the roadwork. You can visit
the Channel 11 Web site for a link to descriptions of these new jobs.
10.
M-Au Attention, passengers of Flight B 1205 to Los Angeles: This flight is overbooked. If you're
available to take a later flight today, please come to the customer service desk right away and
you'll receive a voucher for a free, round-trip, domestic flight. Additionally, we are now scheduled
to board at Gate 24C. We apologize for the late notice, but the door to the jet bridge is not
working, so we're being moved to a different gate. Thank you for your patience. We'll begin
boarding shortly.

CHỦ ĐỀ 1. NHÂN SỰ VÀ HỘI HỌP

(Personnel and Meeting)

1. Question 41 through question 43 refer to the following conversation <Personnel>

W: Let’s discuss the last person we interviewed before we see the next candidate. What did you
think, Miles?
M: After reading his resume, I expected more from him. Although his experience looked relevant,
he wasn’t able to answer our basic question.
W: That’s true. And I’m afraid he wouldn’t contribute much to our team

2. Question 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation <Personnel>

W: Hi, is Mr.Brown in? My name is Linda Toress and I’m here for a job interview
M: Oh, I have been expecting you. My name is Daniel and I’m Mr.Brown’s secretary. He is
currently with other candidates. Take a seat. While you wait, could you fill in the forms, please?
And here’s your temporary ID badge. Be sure to wear it at all times while you are in the bulding.
W: Sure, I will. By the way, is there any place that I can use the internet around here? I need to
check my email.
M: Go straight until you see the sign for the mail room. If you turn left right there, you will see
several computers for visitors.

3. Question 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation <Personnel>

M: Good morning! My name is Billy Tang. I’m here to meet with Mr.Suzuki for a job interview.
W: Hi, Mr.Tang. Mr.Suzuki is interviewing other candidates right now. Please have a seat over
there. Would you like something to drink while you are waiting?
M: No thanks. I just had a cup of coffee in my way here. By the way, do you have any idea about
the health insurance and the pension plan the company offers?
W: I’m sorry. I just started working here. I think you can get some information on the during your
interview.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

4. Question 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation <Personnel>

W: Hi, I only started working here this week, and today is my second day at work. I just read the
email about the training class that the new employees are required to take. Do you have a schedule
of when these classes are offered? I may have to attend a few conference calls with my manager
starting from next week. And I want to check if there is a scheduling conflict.
M: Well, these classes are offered online so it’s possible to take them at any time. You can take
them at any time. You can take them whenever you want as long as they do not hinder your work
productivity.
W: Great. My manager suggests that I start with the business communication course. How do I
register for that?
M: Just go to the company employee’s website. Click on the Work Skill Training tab. It gives a
good explanation of the whole registration process. If you have any further questions, just email
the HR department.

5. Question 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation <Personnel>

W: Mr.Barker. I’d like to congratulate you on being here today. We narrowed the list of

M: Hello, is Mr. Smith in the office? I’m here for the delivery from McDonald Office Supplies.
W: I’m afraid he is not here. He is talking with overseas clients in the meeting room right now. If
it’s urgent, I can go and see if he’s available for a minute. Otherwise, please give me your phone
number and I’ll ring you when he’s back in the office.
M: Well, I don’t think it’s urgent because this is just a box of copy paper he ordered last week. If
you don’t mind, I’ll leave it with you. But you need to sign here.
W: No problem. Where should I put my signature?

2. Question 44 through 46 refers to the following conversation <Purchasing equipment>

W: Sam, I’d like to know if you shipped laser toner cartridges and other printer and toner supplies
from the warehouse this morning. I want you to make sure these items are delivered Bear

floor caused a slight delay last time. However, such problems were appropriately addressed and
they will receive our supplies by the end of this week, at the latest.

3. Question 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation <Purchasing equipment>

M: Hello, this is Tim Ryce from TGX Corp. I’m calling to order 20 new laptops from your store. I
saw your X-20 model in your catalogue and I think I like it. I’d like to make sure it has a fast
internal hard drive and a reliable dual-core CPU.
W: It absolutely does. I think you made a great choice. That model is one of our most popular
laptops this year. You said you need 20 laptops, right? Your total comes to 25,000 dollars. I’m
afraid we don’t apply quantity discounts on orders fewer than 50.
M: Oh, it sounds too expensive. I know it’s quite a small order, but we are one of your biggest
customers. Last time, we purchased over 100 printers at your store. So, can you make an

soon as I get the answer from him.

we can use. Do you happen to know a good place to buy them at a reasonable price?
M: There is an office furniture store on fifth street. It’s situated between the central bus station
and Keiko gas station. It’s called “Super Office furniture.” It offers a wide variety of quality office
chairs. You won’t be disappointed. As it closes at 6, you need to hurry if you want to buy one
today.
W: I think I should leave now. There’s just 30 minutes left before it closes. As I’m not familiar
with the area, I’d better take a taxi.
M: You don’t have to, Jane. It is just a 10-minute walk from here. Follow me and I can walk you
there.

5. Question 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation <Purchasing equipment>

need to send documents to our legal team in Chicago.
(W-Am) Have you tried restarting it? Sometimes that’s all it takes.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

(M-Cn): Oh, I tried that already, but I still can’t get on the Internet. I’m concerned because I
promised to e-mail these documents in time for the meeting with our lawyers at three o’clock.
(W-Am) Well, let me take a look - but in the meantime, why don’t save the files onto a disk and e-
mail them from a different computer?

7. Question 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation <Business issues>

(M-Au) Roxanne, are you having any problems with your computer? Mine hasn’t been working
right since they upgraded everyone’s computer yesterday.
(W-Br) Actually, all of my programs have been running much faster. I’m really impressed with
the new software. What’s the problem with yours?
(M-Au) I can’t play any audio files. The speakers are on, and the volume is turned up as high as it

(W-Br) Did you check the speaker cables? Maybe one of the cables is loose, and it’s not
connecting the computer and the speakers correctly.

W: Hello, Scott. Do you have a minute? I have some problems with my computer and I’d like you
to take a look at it if you are free.
M: You must be kidding, Julia. I thought your computer worked well. It has been working great
since you bought it last month, hasn’t it? What seems to be the problem, anyway?
W: Well, an error message that I have never seen before popped up when I tried to run the
spreadsheet program this morning. So I restarted the computer, but the same thing happened over
and over again. I will get into big trouble unless I can get it repaired as soon as possible. I have to
prepare my presentation for tomorrow’s meeting and I really need the data saved on my computer.
M: Actually, I’m busy upgrading the company sever right now. But I can get Peter over to you in

W: Right. They were supposed to get to our office at 11 but a guy from the repair center just
called me and he said they were having trouble finding our building. I gave him directions and
they will probably be here in about half an hour.
M: Hopefully, they’ll arrive in time. If we don’t get our computer fixed soon, we will be in big
trouble. I don’t really want to work overtime again.

W: Did you try using the energy saving button? It’s at the top of the controls. Don’t you
remember the demonstration last week?
M: No, I missed it. I was sick that day.
W: Well, there’s a power saving feature on the photocopier. When the machine’s not in use, it
looks like it’s turned off. Try pressing that button and see if it works.

CHỦ ĐỀ 3: MUA SẮM, DU LỊCH

1. Question 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation <Shopping>
M: Hello, I’m calling to see if you can give me a hand. I purchased a laptop computer from one of
your stores half a year ago. But I think it has a fatal problem. It often crashes when I have
multiple windows open at the same time. I have never experienced that before.
W: Well, I can’t tell you exactly what the problem is. Why don’t you bring it back to the store and
get it examined? All our computers have a two-year warranty, so your laptop is still covered. You
can get it repaired or replaced free of charge as long as you have the original receipt.
M: I wish I could take it to the store. But I’m afraid I moved away from the area a month ago. It’s
not very convenient for me to come all the way back to repair it. To be honest, it’s too far.
W: In that case, you can send it directly to the manufacturer by post. I’ll let you know the address
and contact numbers if you’d like.

2. Question 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation <Shopping>

W: Excuse me, I’m here to buy a laptop computer but I don’t have a lot of knowledge about
computers.
M: Don’t worry. I think I could help you. What features are you looking for?
W: Well, I’m a college student. So, I don’t need a high-end personal computer designed for
technical or scientific applications. I want something light and portable that can run some basic
programs.
M: Then I recommend the new laptop model from Bell. I think the model 300XT would be
perfect for you. It has a 5-inch display with 800x480 resolution. It also supports dual-mode
function and wireless internet. Also it comes with a 24-month warranty. If you buy this today, we
offer you a laser printer for free. So don’t miss this great opportunity.

3. Question 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation <Shopping>

M: Pardon me. I’m looking for an LCD TV for the living room.
W: Sure, come with me, please. This HD-300X model will be an excellent choice. It features
high-definition resolution and built-in stereo speakers. I bet you will be able to catch up on your
favorite sports and latest movies in your house.
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M: Wow, it looks fantastic but it seems too big for our living room. Do you have anything in a
smaller size?
W: Of course. Here’s a 32-inch flat screen TV that’s suitable for small spaces. It’s selling for only
150 dollars today. It is such a bargain. It would be much better to get this one rather than plan a
summer vacation.

4. Question 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation <Shopping>

M: Hi, H&D Computer customer service desk. This is Jerry. What can I do for you?
W: Hello, I am calling regarding a laptop computer I purchased from one of your stores last week.
It has been functioning OK for the past week. When I started it up this morning, everything
looked great. However, it shut down automatically when I turned it on this afternoon. After that,
the same thing happened over and over again. This is really driving me crazy.
M: Oh, it seem like there’s some problem with the hard disk drive. But there are other possible
reasons for that. It would be better for a technician to have a look at it. Why don’t you take it to
one of our service centers nearby?
W: That’s a good idea. Let me check on the internet to see if there’s a center near my place.

5. Question 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation <Shopping>

W: I’d like to buy this pink blouse. How much is it? You take credit cards, right?
M: Sorry, we only accept either cash or check. Let me look at the price tag. Oh, that will be 120
dollars.
W: Well, I have only a 100-dollar bill in my purse. So I need 20 dollars more in cash. Is there an
ATM in this shopping mall? If you can hold this blouse for a moment, I’ll go and withdraw some

WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M: Actually, I’m thinking of renting a car and decided to leave earlier on Saturday to have some
spare time to tour the city by myself before the exhibition starts.
W: Really? It’s a long way to drive. I think you should take breaks more frequently to relieve
fatigue while you’re behind the wheel.

took turns driving? I’m sure it would be fun.

7. Question 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation <Travel>

economy class. The flight departs at 10 a.m. On the 4th and returns at 8 p.m. on the 9th. How
does that sound?
M: That’s great. How much will it cost?

comes to 1,450 dollars.

8. Question 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation <Travel>

M: Excuse me, I need to be on the next bus to the airport. Do you have any idea which bus I need
to take to get there?
W: Yes, you want the number 142 bus. It leaves for the airport every 30 minutes. According to
the schedule, the next one will be arriving at 8 o’clock. The bus stop is right around the corner, on
your right. You can’t miss it.

takes less than 2 hours to get there. I’m sure you will arrive no later than 12:30 pm.
M: That’s great. But isn’t it a lot more expensive than the regular train?
W: Not much. It’s just $60 each way, so there’s a $5 difference. However, the price is going up
by 20% as of next week, which is the start of peak summer season.

10. Question 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation <Travel>

M: Excuse me. Does this bus go to the Pacific Aquarium?
W: It used to, but the bus route I’m driving has been changed lately. I think you need to take the

M: Thank you. By the way, does that bus stop here as well?
W: No, it stops across the street. Just walk down this road and you’ll see a crosswalk. Cross the
street there and you’ll find the bus stop right next to the bank.

[W]: You can get one at the gift shop, but it doesn’t open until 9 o’clock. If you’re in a hurry,
there’s a store down the road that sells them.
[M]: It’s 8:30 now. I think I’ll just go and have breakfast at the hotel restaurant first. I don’t feel
like walking out in this rain.

7. Question 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation <Hotel>

M: I’d like a non-smoking room with a view of the lake, please.
W: I’m terriblely sorry, Mr. Brown, but we only have suites facing the lake right now and they are
much more expensive. However, we do have rooms facing the park or the city. Would you care to
take either one of these room?
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

M: All right, I’ll take the room facing the city. Now, could you tell me what time your restaurant
opens in the morning? I have an early meeting with a client tomorrow and I would like to have
breakfast before I take off to meet him.
W: I don’t think you will have any problems with that. Our restaurant opens at 5 a.m.

8. Question 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation <Hotel>

[M]: Here is your room key. I hope you will enjoy your stay here.
[W]: Thank you. And by the way, I heard there is a swimming pool at this hotel. Can you tell me
where it is?
[M]: Of course. Our pool is located on the basement floor. It’s open until 10 every evening.
[W]: Great. I’ll go for a dip in the water before I get some dinner at the restaurant. Thank you.

9. Question 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation <Hotel>

W: Most of our hotel guests seem to have trouble with the lighting in our room. They complain
about being unable to do any work, especially reading.
M: That’s true. I’ve heard that quite often when they check out. How do you think we could
provide more light?
W: Well, we could place a lamp by the desk chairs in addition to the ones on the nightstands.
M: That’s a good idea, but if we want to buy that many lamps, the regional office has to approve
it first. We’ll have to write up a proposal for the next regional manger’s meeting.

10. Question 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation <Hotel>

M: Hi, this is George Frasier. I’m calling to confirm my room reservation. I’m supposed to be
booked at your hotel from March 6 to March 9.
W: One moment, please, sir. Yes, you’re booked for three nights in a deluxe suite room.
M: Right. By the way, I was wondering if your hotel offers airport shuttle service to and from
Sydney’s airport. I’m flight in late on March 6 and I’m scheduled to arrive at the airport at around
midnight.
W; Sure, but we offer the service for $10 each way with advance notice required. Would you like
me to arrange that for you?

CHỦ ĐỀ 6: NGÂN HÀNG – BƯU ĐIỆN – BẤT ĐỘNG SẢN

1. Question 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation <Bank>
M: Welcome to Clarke National Bank. How can I help you today?
W: Well, I saw your advertisement in the window that anyone who opens a bank account here
will receive a bonus for signing up. So I’d like to open up an account.
M: Excellent! I’ll arrange for you to fill out the paperwork with one of our account
representatives. Meanwhile, you can take a seat in the reception area and someone will be with
you shortly. You’ll just need a driver’s license, passport, or another official form of photo
identification.

2. Question 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation <Bank>

M: Good morning. I’d like to set up a savings account with your bank.
W: Of course. We can open the account today, if you’d like. You’ll just have to fill out this form,
and then I’ll need to see some photo identification.

out there, and come back later this afternoon with my I.D.

3. Question 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation <Post office>

M: Excuse me. How much would it cost to send this package to London? It’s a gift and I’d like it
to be delivered no later than Wednesday if possible.
W: It will be 11 dollars and 65 cents if we send it by regular mail. But if you want to ensure that
your package is delivered by Wednesday, I suggest using the express delivery service. The
express delivery service not only keeps track of where your package is on a daily basis, but
ensures it gets to London within two days. That said, the express delivery service would cost an
additional 10 dollars.
M: Hmm... That’s expensive. The price is a bit out of my budget. I’d rather not pay for the
express delivery. I’ll just take my chances with the regular mail. Can you tell me when it will get
there using the regular mail?
W: With our standard service it should get there by approximately Thursday afternoon. Of course,
depending on the volume of mail it might take a day or two longer.

M: Actually, it’s a gift for my cousin and I want it to arrive there by July 5 at the latest.
W: Oh, it’s already July 3 so I’d suggest you mail it by express mail to get it to Montreal within
two days. But that will cost you $20.

5. Question 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation <Real estate>

W: Hi, I’m calling about the office space for rent on Garrison Street. I saw an advertisement
posted outside the building. Is it still available?
M: Yes, it is. The previous tenants were three lawyers, so it’s currently set up as three offices and
a large waiting area with a receptionist’s desk.
W: Oh, that sounds like more space than I need. I really only want one office for myself. I’ve
been running an event-planning business from my home, but now I have so many clients that I
need a little more room.
M: Well, you wouldn’t want to pay for more space than you need. I’m the agent for other
properties as well. Why don’t I send you a list of available office spaces along with their prices?
Then you can get back to me if you’re interested in any of them.

6. Question 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation <Real estate>

today.

today and won’t be back for a week. Is there no way I can drop by the office to give back the keys
during the week?
M: Sure. You can put the keys in an envelope and slide in under the front door of this office
anytime. We’ll just need them before Sunday.

8. Question 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation <Real estate>

[W]: I saw the For-Rent sign on your lobby window? Can you tell me how much the rent is here?

you’ll need, from the amenities list to available services such as the spa and fitness center. I
WeUp English Academy – 149 Phan Đình Phùng, Huế

recommend making up your mind soon, though. The rooms get rented out pretty quickly, and I
don’t think it will be available for very long. As soon as you make a 10% deposit on the total cost
of the unit for three days, I can reserve the room for you.

10. Question 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation <Real estate>

W: Mr. Randolph, I think this place would be perfect for your cafe. Queen St. is one of the most
popular areas for tourism and shopping and this building is just 2 blocks away from the subway
station.
M: Yes, it looks great. But I don’t think I can afford $1,200 a month in rent. The newspaper ad
you ran said you have another space in the Renaissance Mall. Is it still available?
W: I’m sorry, but it was just rented out this morning. But we have several similar places you may
want to see. Would you like me to show them to you?

89
I’ve called this meeting to announce that we’ve selected an executive director to
oversee our new laboratory in Geneva. As you know, 90we were looking for a person
who could manage the daily operations of the lab as well as supervise the fifteen
scientists who work there. We also needed a person who could propose new programs and
recommend changes. That is why we’ve chosen Marie Windsor. 91Dr. Windsor studied
in Paris and Montreat, and has been the principal scientist at Griffin Labs in
London, where she has been in charge of a staff of 25. She’s published 35 articles in
major journals, and we think she’ll be perfect for this position.

endeavors. 93This month, our women’s wear sales have tripled and we finally got to
the top among more than 50 major clothing stores on the west coast. Next month, I
hope to see a huge increase in the sales of men’s wear, which could place us as
number one in the United States. Once again, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of

and enthusiasm. Finally, there will be some good news for some of you soon. 94To
recognize your great efforts, the board of directors decided to promote 3 top sales
clerks to be regional managers next month. I wish you the best of luck.

9. Question 95 to 97 refer to the following speech

Hello, everyone. 95My name is Tom Jacobs and I’ll be responsible for today’s
computer training course. I was a little surprised when Peter Simpson, the head of
human resources talked to me about the result of the recent in-house survey. It indicates
that nearly half of our employees have virtually no basic computer skills dealing with
databases, spreadsheets, or even word processors. All they can do is conduct routine tasks
on the internet such as checking e-mail or reading online articles. They are being left out
of the technology age due to the lack of education or the lack of internet. I have spent my
whole life trying to develop more accessible and flexible learning programs for computer
novices. This course will be divided into 2 different sessions, one in the morning and the
other in the afternoon. 96Now let’s start the morning session along with the course
manual. 97Let’s open your manual to page 5 and learn the basic computer terms first.

10. Question 98 to 100 refer to the following speech

Good morning. I called this meeting to share opinions about our new growth strategy with
you. As you know, 98we have experienced a drastic decrease in sales of large cars in
the last 3 years. Although small foreign cars are in the United States, full-size cars
such as our AX models, have become less popular in the market. I think it’s time to
change our future direction. 99I recommend we develop new producing lines for
compact cars as well as hybrid vehicles. In particular, cost-effective hybrid cars are
“strategically” important to us. While the new hybrids are almost as powerful as
normal cars, their fuel efficiency is much better than most cars. I’m sure they are
becoming more popular with consumers. 100As the president, I firmly believe that we
should start to develop effective hybrids that people want to drive as soon as possible.
