Medical waste of Al-Minar Hospital

Hospital Profile: The Al Minar Hospital is located at the Mohammadpur in Dhaka. This has been
established in 2014. It has 9 Operation theater and 2 ICU. For the patient there are one ward
which has 3 bed. Al Minar provides 3 kinds of cabin system which are VIP cabin, medium cabin
and general cabin. In total there are 30 cabins. Almost 300 employees and 30 reputed doctors are
available there. Some of them are permanent and some of are part time service provider. The
medication cost is also cheaper than other private hospital.

We have surveyed some question in Al Minar hospital on 14 august 2017 about there medical
waste.

Q1. How many types of waste materials (obsolete product) are produced by the hospital?

As the have answered to us, everyday so many medial wasted produced form there hospital.

Q2. What is the longevity of product based on type?

O3. What do you do when products become out of use?

Everyday they produced almost one truck of waste. After using material its becomes out of use.
Then they keep these waste in baskets. There are so many waste which are so smelly and bad for
environment. Which can be effected to their patients. So that they keep all there waste well
covered. In every passage of this hospital, they keep 2 baskets and they have one store room for
storing all these waste.

Q4. When do you consider the product is totally out of use?

Its depends on product types. Some electric product can be used couple of years and some of
couple of days. When these product does not work anymore it becomes out of use. On the other
hand there are medical waste and chemical waste. Maximum products become out of use after
using a time and some chemical products lasts depend on its expire date. As discussion they
consider the product is totally out of use.
Q5. Is there any reuse, manufacture, and recycle mechanism of the waste? If yes, how is it done?

Largely, they do not reuse of any waste. They throw out all useless waste. Sometimes before
throwing out they cut the products. For that no one can not reuse of those products. On the other
hand, some of electric waste they used to repair. For example: generator, water filter, computer,
light, fan, AC etc. Apart from that, they used to wash some machineries which can be use after
cleaning.

Q6. Who collect the waste?

There are two agency who collects waste form Al Minar Hospital. They sell their valuable waste
to the Prison Bangladesh. They come everyday at hospital for collecting waste. Another one is,
city corporation corporation. They come at hospital once in a day, but if waste stores too much
they comes twice in a day.

Q7. What are the challenges you face in disposing waste?

They face some challenges in disposing waste. Sometimes some patient do not uses dustbin
properly. They throw out waste anywhere they like. So it’s tough challenge to keep clean the
hospital. For that they have appointed 20 stuff for cleaning. On the other hand, during national
holidays often no agency does not come for collecting waste. So keeping those waste is quite
difficult. For that they have made a store room and they have their own dustbin. By this, they
overcome the problem.

Q8. How much are you aware of harmful effect of waste?

They are very aware of harmful effect of waste.\]

Q9. What do you do to protect from the harmful effect of environment of waste?

They take some steps to protect the environment. As we discussed, they have enough dustbin.
For this, the harmful effect can not spread to the environment. An appreciable step they are
taking. Usually they get some unusual body part such as tumor. After investigating those parts
they do not throw these out with other waste. They give these things to an agency. They destroy
those body part by a machine. After that all parts become liquid. Then they purify it and make
fresh water from that.
Q10. Point out some suggestion to manage waste in a better way that will not affect environment.
