 Like Emerson, you, too, have experiences from

which you learn important lessons. A reflective
essay describes a personal experience and
explores its significance. Autobiographies,
letters, and memoirs often include reflective
writing that gives insight into the writer’s action.
GROUP 2

A successful reflective essay should

• be written in the first person
• describe an important
experience in your life or in the
life of someone you admire
• use figurative language,
dialogue, sensory details, or
other techniques to re-create the
experience for the reader
• explain the significance of the
event
• make an observation about life
based on the experience
• encourage readers to think
about the significance of the
experience in light of their own
lives
GROUP 3

A method of reflection is a
necessary process in your
continuous learning. By way of
reflective practice, you will be able
to:
1. Look back on your corpus (your
collection of past writings);
2. Assess your emotions,
experiences, and actions;
3. Take a conscious appraisal of
the feedback of your peers;
4. Categorize your writing style,
principles, and assumptions within
the context of your works;
5. Bring together theories with
your practice of CNF;
6. Increase your knowledge base
and reach a higher level of
understanding; and
7. Plan your future actions.
GROUP 4

Four key elements of reflective

writing:
1. Reporting and responding to
a critical issue or experience;
2. Relating this issue or
experience to your own
knowledge in this field;
3. Reasoning about causes and
effects of this issue/experience
according to relevant theories or
literature and/or similarities or
differences with other
experiences you have had;
4. Reconstructing your thinking
to plan new ways to approach
the issue or engage similar
experiences in the future.
