statement correctly guessed, the group member gets one point. The student with the most
points at the end of the game is the winner.

When your partner asks you for more details, you should switch to the simple past grammar
“When did that happen?”
“It happened two years ago when I was on vacation in Costa Rica.”
“What kind of shark was it?”
“It was a hummerhead shark.”

Common expressions to show distrust:

That sounds suspicious. I find that hard to believe.
I find that hard to swallow. I don’t buy that.

UNIT 6
Reading: What events help define you?
A. Read about Ann, Sam, and Carlos talking about events in their lives that had a big impact on
who they are and what they want.

Ann: I’ve been interested in art for as long as I can remember. My

mother says I started drawing when I was about 4 years old. My aunt
bought me a crayon set and coloring book, and after that I drew all
the time.
I didn’t think about art seriously, though, until middle school. I had
an art teacher that I just loved. I liked the way she talked about art
and encouraged us. She had so much passion.
One day, I was still working on a drawing even after the class finished.
She came to me and said that she thought I had true talent. She said
that I could be a great artist if I wanted to. Those words had a big impact on me. She not only
got me thinking about art as a career but also made me a better student in all my classes. I used
to daydream a lot in class, and I drew pictures in my textbooks more than I read them. After that
day, however, I started to change. I’m really grateful for her.

Sam: I’ve always been a good student. My mother says I began

reading when I was about 4 years old! I was always happy to learn
new things and get good grades, but I didn’t think so seriously about
what I wanted to be.
In high school, I had a literature class, and I didn’t think too much
about it at first. A few months into the class, we had to read a book
called To Kill a Mockingbird. It was a great book. It’s still my favorite.
The main character was a really brave lawyer, Atticus Finch. I was
angry at the injustice in the book, and I realized that there is still injustice today. A lawyer is
someone who can make a real difference. They don’t just talk about making the world better; they
really can do something. I decided to become a lawyer then, and I’ve never had any second thoughts.

Carlos: When I was younger, I was actually a good student. I

wanted to be successful like my father.
Something changed when I got into high school. It wasn’t just one
thing. I realized that my father didn’t have much time to relax and be
with our family. He was, and is, incredibly busy all the time. When
he’s in front of people, he’s all smiles and handshakes, but when he’s
not in public, he’s always stressed and anxious. I started to wonder
about that kind of success. What’s the point of making a lot of
money if you are stressed and unhappy all the time?
There was one more thing. I watched a movie called Into the Wild. It’s about a young man who
walks away from an easy and comfortable life and goes to Alaska to live alone. It actually doesn’t
have a very happy ending, but the movie really got me thinking. Life should be more of an
adventure and a challenge. To really live life is to go out and try new things and have new
experiences. I don’t think you can get that working from 9-5 in a regular office job all day until
you die of an early heart attack. I was never the same after that year. I see everything differently now.
