TUTORIAL # 3: GRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS AND REDOX TITRATION

CALCULATIONS

1. A 13.2 g of a sample of zinc sulphate, ZnSO4 ∙ xH2 O, was strongly heated until

no further change in mass was recorded. On heating, all the water of

crystallization evaporated as follows:

ZnSO4 ∙ xH2 O → ZnSO4 + xH2 O

Calculate the number of moles of water of crystallization in the zinc sulphate

sample given that 7.4 g of solid remained after strong heating.

2. A 2.00 g sample of limestone was dissolved in hydrochloric acid and all the

calcium present in the sample was converted to Ca2+(aq). Excess ammonium

oxalate solution, (NH4)2C2O4(aq), was added to the solution to precipitate the

calcium ions as calcium oxalate, CaC2O4(s). The precipitate was filtered, dried

and weighed to a constant mass of 2.43 g. Determine the percentage by mass

of calcium in the limestone sample.

3. A certain barium halide exists as the hydrated salt BaX2 ∙2H2 O. where X is the

halogen. The barium content of the salt can be determined by gravimetric

methods. A sample of the halide (0.2650 g) was dissolved in water (200 mL) and

excess sulfuric acid added. The mixture was then heated and held at boiling for
45 minutes. The precipitate (barium sulfate, mw = 233.3) was filtered off, washed

and dried. Mass of precipitate obtained = 0.2533 g. Determine the identity of X.

4. The iron content of iron ore can be determined by titration with a standard

KMnO4 solution. The iron ore is dissolved in HCl and all the iron is reduced to

Fe2+ ions. This solution is then titrated with KMNO4 solution producing Fe3+ and

Mn2+ ions in acidic solution. If it required 38.37 mL of 0.0198 M KMO4 to titrate

a solution made from 0.6128 g of iron ore, what is the mass percent of iron in

the iron ore.

5 Fe2+(aq) + MnO4- (aq) + 8 H+(aq) → 5 Fe3+(aq)) + Mn2+(aq) + 4 H2O

5. The quantity of antimony in a sample can be determined by an oxidation-

reduction titration with an oxidizing agent. A 9.62 g sample of stibnite, an ore of

antimony, is dissolved in hot, concentrated HCl(aq) and passed over a reducing

agent so that all the antimony is in the form Sb3+. The Sb3+(aq) is completely

oxidized by 43.70 mL of a 0.1250 M solution of KBrO3. Calculate the amount of

antimony in the sample and its percentage in the ore.

6H+(aq) + BrO3¯(aq) + 3Sb3+(aq) → Br¯(aq) + 3Sb5+(aq) + 3H2O(l)

6. Give examples of industrial applications of titrimetric analysis, gravimetric

analysis, distillation and chromatography.
