What are some of the cities where jazz first developed during the 1920s and 1930s? Why do
you think these particular cities became important sites for jazz?
● Some cities where jazz first developed were New Orleans and Harlem, NY. Harlem was
popular because of its cotton club while New Orleans was popular because of many
African American musicians being up north.
From the timeline, on the left choose one subgenre of jazz and discuss what elements are found
in this type of music.
● A subgenre of jazz is swing which is an upbeat form of jazz music and is often times
used for dancing.
Choose one decade from the timeline on the left, and discuss how that particular decade
influenced the development of jazz music.
● The pre-1900 era was the development influence of the development of jazz music.
What is hard bop?
● Hard bop is a subgenre of jazz and is considered an extension of bebop. It uses R&B,
blues and gospel.
What is jazz fusion?
● Jazz fusion is the fusion of jazz and rock. It uses electronic instruments, rock rhythms,
and simple harmony.
What is jazz like today?
● Jazz today tries to keep similar patterns that were once used in the past. Several forms
that are used include blues, swing, bebop, and hard bop. Its one of the least-popular
types of music people in the United States listen to today.
After listening to some of the music from different jazz composers, which one do you like the
best? Why?
● After listening, I like Bill Evans the best because I like how his music is soothing and
relaxing to listen to with a style he uses to make the sound flowing easily.

What are some ways that modern technology is used in music today that is different than music
from when jazz originated? How do you think emerging technology will affect music in the
future?
● Some ways modern technology is used in music is that it is used in smooth jazz, EDM
and vaporwave by manipulating the sounds normal instruments make. They use
computers and electronic sounds to create a greater variety of the different
tones/sounds. As time passes, technology will develop even more leading to new
sounds created in the music pieces.
