PROBLEM SOLVING:

FIND A SOLUTION FOR THE FOLLOWING:

1. A calibrated flask has a mass of 30gm when empty, 81gm when filled with water, and
68gm when filled with oil. Find the density and unit weight of water and oil.

2. A solid metal cube 8cm on a side has a mass of 4.08 kg. a) What is the density of the
cube? b) if the cube is made of gold with density of 19300 kg/m 3 how long is a side of
the cube?

3. A solid cone has a base 5cm in diameter and is 10 cm high. If this cone is made of
iron with density 7960kg/m3, how much does it weigh?

4. What is the absolute viscosity of gasoline if the kinematic viscosity is 4.5 x 10 -6 m2/sec,
the specific gravity of which is 0.680?

5. Calculate the surface tension of a liquid which rises 50cm in a circular tube 0.04mm in
diameter. The angle of contact is 20o, specific weight of liquid is 45 x 104 N/m3.

6. Compute the volume change of a solid brass sphere, 200mm in diameter when
subjected to a pressure of 3.5 x 107 Pa. The bulk modulus for brass = 17 x 1010 Pa.

7. Find the celerity of waves in a fluid of which the bulk modulus is 0.4 x 10 10 N/m2 and a
mass density of 1.26 x 103 kg/m3.
8. A thin sheet of gold foil has an area of 3.12cm 2 and a mass of 6.5 milligrams. How
thick is the sheet? The density of gold is 19300 kg/m3.

9. A certain gasoline weighs 7000 Nt/m3. What are the values of its density, specific
volume, specific gravity relative to water at 60 oF.
Ɣ water at 60oF = 9803.94 Nt/m3 ρ water at 60oF = 1000.94 kg/m3

10. The specific volume of a certain gas 0.72 m 3/kg. What is the density, unit weight and
specific gravity of this gas?
