ELECTROMAGNETIC BRAKING SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION:
An Electromagnetic Braking system uses Magnetic force to engage the brake, but the
torque required for braking is transmitted manually. Electromagnetic brakes operate
electrically, but unlike eddy current brakes, transmit torque mechanically.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:

The main objective of our project is replacing the conventional braking system with a
electromagnetic braking system which is less cost with greater performance and no need
for maintenance and/or replacement.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT:
Eddy current braking system typically include a rotor mounted to a rotatable shaft, such
as vehicle axle and a magnetic power source, such as a electromagnet or a permanent
magnet fixed to a vehicle frame. Eddy currents are produced in the rotor due to a relative
velocity difference between the rotor and the stationary magnetic power source. The eddy
current generates a braking force retarding the rotation of the rotor, thereby decelerating
the vehicle.

BRIEF METHODOLOGY:
Electricity is applied to the coil at the time of braking. This develops a magnetic field
around it and the rotating armature gets attracted towards the coil. As a result the inner
and outer friction plates placed between the armature and the coil gets squeezed, which
develops a torque and eventually the vehicle comes to rest.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
A relative rotation of the rotor with respect to the stator produces eddy currents between
the poles of the stator and an outer surface of the rotor, causing the rotor to come to a
rest. An Electromagnetic or eddy current brake or retarder device is for bringing a vehicle
to rest is thus disclosed.
