A Beginning Course in
Colville-Okanagan Salish
by Sʕ t ʔ
(Sarah Peterson)
2nd Edition
Authors' Notes
We began development of the original Spokane Salish curriculum upon which this work is
based in the spring of 2003 with Ann McCrea and Orten Ford at Wellpinit, Washington. The 30
lessons we developed in Spokane were used to teach beginning Spokane Salish at the Spokane Tribal
College and at Wellpinit Middle School during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 academic years. At the same
time, Chris developed and taught the same curriculum in Spanish for use at Wellpinit Middle School.
In the summer of 2004, we began converting the curriculum to Nsəlxcin with Sarah Peterson
at the Colville Confederated Tribes' Omak language office. At the end of that summer, we had a basic
translation of each lesson and a rough recording of the words and sentences. Throughout the 2004-
2005 school year, we met with Sarah on a monthly basis at Nt łqn, the Lower Similkameen Band
band school at Cawston, British Columbia. At Nt łqn, we made new, more accurate recordings of
the lesson vocabulary and began corrections to the written materials. Between recording sessions, we
began to collect clip art and to write the work sheets that accompany each lesson.
From January through August of 2005, this Nsəlxcin curriculum with worksheets and audio
disks was first officially presented to students by LaRae at Eastern Washington University with the
support of Deidre Almeida of the American Indian Studies Program. With the support of the Lower
Similkameen Indian Band, some new graphics and corrections were added in the fall of 2005. In the
fall of 2010, Grahm and Dominque Wiley-Camacho reformatted this text with a Unicode font and
prepared new graphics files to go along with the book. Spellings throughout this edition were
corrected and revised by Christopher Parkin in 2010 and 2011.
