At the end of 60 minutes, the learners shall be able to:

a. Describe the different types of volcanic eruption; and
b. Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt.

d. SCIENCE CONCEPTS:
● Volcano- is the natural opening in the surface of the earth where molten rocks, hot
Gases, smoke, and ash are ejected.
● Types of volcanic eruptions
1. Phreatic or hydrothermal- a steam –driven eruption as the hot rocks come in
contact
with water.
2. Phreatomagmatic- is a violent eruption due to the contact between water and
magma.
3. Strombolian- a periodic weak to violent eruption characterized by fountain lava.
4. Vulcanian- characterized by tall eruption columns that reach up to 20 km high
with pyroclastic flow and ashfall tephra.
5. Plinian – excessively explosive type of eruption of gas and pyroclastics.

Now let’s have 5 groups for this exciting activity
class. I will group yourselves based on the name
of the volcano in the Philippines
1st Group – Mayon Group
2nd Group – Taal Group
3rd Group – Pinatubo Group
4th Group – Canlaon Group (moving to their respective groups)
5th Group – Vulcan Group

I have here the envelopes of materials for you to

perform the activity.

So on this activity, you will use manila paper and

pentel pen, and inside the envelope is the
pictures of some volcanoes. I’ll be giving this to
each group.
In this activity all you have to do is to describe the
types of volcanic eruptions based on the video
that I have shown to you earlier. You can start
(Students perform their task. Their answers may

Based on the activity that you have performed,
let us check if you described correctly each type
of volcanic eruption. Let us first discuss Phreatic
or hydrothermal eruption.

eruption characterized by ash columns but may
be onset of a larger eruption.
