(GRADE 9)
I. OBJECTIVES:
d. SCIENCE CONCEPTS:
● Volcano- is the natural opening in the surface of the earth where molten rocks, hot
Gases, smoke, and ash are ejected.
● Types of volcanic eruptions
1. Phreatic or hydrothermal- a steam –driven eruption as the hot rocks come in
contact
with water.
2. Phreatomagmatic- is a violent eruption due to the contact between water and
magma.
3. Strombolian- a periodic weak to violent eruption characterized by fountain lava.
4. Vulcanian- characterized by tall eruption columns that reach up to 20 km high
with pyroclastic flow and ashfall tephra.
5. Plinian – excessively explosive type of eruption of gas and pyroclastics.
III. DEVELOPMENTAL TASK
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY
A. Pre-Activity
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Checking of Attendance
e. Review
“Based on the topic that we had
discussed yesterday, what are the three general
volcanic types according to the shape of their
cone? Ma’am?
Yes Jambey?
Shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and composite
cones, Ma’am
Very Good!
B. Motivation
Who among of you here had already observed
when the volcano erupts? (hand raising)
Do you know that volcanoes have different types
of eruptions?
Yes Ma’am
Now I want you to pay attention on this video.
This video presentation shows the different
volcanoes eruptive styles. I want you to observe
carefully because I will ask several questions
afterwards.
(showing video)
Ma’am!
Yes Miguerman?
Ma’am!
Yes Babelyn?
Exactly!
Yes Elvira?
Phreatic or hydrothermal
Phreatomagmatic
Strombolian
Vulcanian
Plinian
C. Exploration/Activity
Now let’s have 5 groups for this exciting activity
class. I will group yourselves based on the name
of the volcano in the Philippines
1st Group – Mayon Group
2nd Group – Taal Group
3rd Group – Pinatubo Group
4th Group – Canlaon Group (moving to their respective groups)
5th Group – Vulcan Group
D. Analysis/Discussion/Abstraction
Based on the activity that you have performed,
let us check if you described correctly each type
of volcanic eruption. Let us first discuss Phreatic
or hydrothermal eruption.
In line with the video, who can describe Phreatic
or hydrothermal eruption.
Phreatic or hydrothermal- is a short-lived
eruption characterized by ash columns but may
be onset of a larger eruption.
Very well said!
Phreatic or hydrothermal eruption a steam –
driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact
with water.
Next, is the phreatomagmatic eruption. Who can
describe its characteristics?
Ma’am
Yes Mary Joy?
Phreatomagmatic eruption produce a large
column of very fine ash and high-speed and
sideway emission of pyroclastics called base
surges are observed.
Very good!
Phreatomagmatic is a violent eruption due to the
contact between water and magma.
Ma’am
Yes, Melca?
Yes, Cerlyn?
Plinian is excessively explosive type of eruption
of gas and pyroclastics.
Yes, Rellian?
It will bring huge distractions to our farmers and
also to the animals living in a particular area.
Very well said!
Some more idea? Ma’am
Yes, Cathy?
It will cause some health problems to all living
things especially human being such problems
likes asthma, and other respiratory problems.
Exactly!
What else?
Ma’am
Yes, Crystal?
It will cause air and water pollution.
Correct!
F. Assessment/Evaluation
Direction: Describe correctly each type of
volcanic eruptions.
Type of Eruptions Description
1.Strombolian
2.Plinian
3. Phreatic
4. Phreatomagmatic
5. Vulcanian
Assignment
a. List down the active and inactive volcano in the
Philippines. Write it in a ½ crosswise.
