FOREWORD
PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) has been developed based on the accumulated knowledge,
experience and best practices of the PETRONAS group supplementing National and International
standards where appropriate. The key objective of PTS is to ensure standard technical practice across
the PETRONAS group.
Compliance to PTS is compulsory for PETRONAS-operated facilities and Joint Ventures (JVs) where
PETRONAS has more than fifty percent (50%) shareholding and/or operational control, and includes
all phases of work activities.
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers who use PTS are solely responsible in ensuring the quality of
work, goods and services meet the required design and engineering standards. In the case where
specific requirements are not covered in the PTS, it is the responsibility of the
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers to propose other proven or internationally established
standards or practices of the same level of quality and integrity as reflected in the PTS.
In issuing and making the PTS available, PETRONAS is not making any warranty on the accuracy or
completeness of the information contained in PTS. The Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers shall
ensure accuracy and completeness of the PTS used for the intended design and engineering
requirement and shall inform the Owner for any conflicting requirement with other international
codes and technical standards before start of any work.
PETRONAS is the sole copyright holder of PTS. No part of this document may be reproduced, stored
in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, recording or
otherwise) or be disclosed by users to any company or person whomsoever, without the prior written
consent of PETRONAS.
The PTS shall be used exclusively for the authorised purpose. The users shall arrange for PTS to be
kept in safe custody and shall ensure its secrecy is maintained and provide satisfactory information to
PETRONAS that this requirement is met.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Please be informed that the entire PTS inventory is currently undergoing transformation exercise from
2013 - 2015 which includes revision to numbering system, format and content. As part of this change,
the PTS numbering system has been revised to 6-digit numbers and drawings, forms and requisition
to 7-digit numbers. All newly revised PTS will adopt this new numbering system, and where required
make reference to other PTS in its revised numbering to ensure consistency. Users are requested to
refer to PTS 00.01.01 (Index to PTS) for mapping between old and revised PTS numbers for clarity. For
further inquiries, contact PTS administrator at ptshelpdesk@petronas.com.my

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) provides the minimum technical requirements for
Mechanical symbols used in Process Flow Diagram (PFD), Utility Flow Diagrams (UFD), & Piping
and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), Process Safeguarding Flow Diagram (PSFD) & Material
Selection Diagram (MSD) for identification of equipment and piping.
1.1 SCOPE
1.1.1 This PTS specifies the requirements and gives recommendation for:
i. Graphical representation using symbols of equipment and piping in PFD, UFD,
P&ID, PSFD & MSD.
ii. Numbering system to identify equipment and piping in PFD, UFD, P&ID, PSFD &
MSD and other related documents.
Refer to PTS Requirements, General Definition of Terms, Abbreviations & Reading Guide PTS
00.01.03 for General Definition of Terms & Abbreviations.
No Term Definition
1 Very Toxic Substances that are very hazardous for the environment or human
(substances) health, as specified in PTS 16.50.01 (which also identifies "toxic"
substances by reference to chemical substances databases).

No Abbreviation Description
Symbols used in PFD, UFD, P&ID, PSFD & MSD shall be in accordance with the following table
for respective disciplines:
If required, these symbols may also be used in other document. The symbols can be copied in
electronic form from Standard Drawing D16.92.013 to D16.92.024.
For symbols not found in this PTS, a simple outline should be drawn, together with a short
description of its function.
Certain basic symbols are only in use for PFD while other symbols can be applied in all other
documents mentioned above.
For symbols that are not adequate to indicate the type or function of an equipment, additional
notes should be added next to the symbol.
For mechanical symbols that are not available in Standard Drawing D16.92.013 to D16.92.024,
the Owner shall be consulted.
For solid handling and preparation plants, the symbols in ISO561 shall be referred and used.

3.1 GENERAL
All equipment shall be identified by a tag number of the following format:
AA-XXXYYZ, in which:
No Sequence Description
Number
i. Equipment type shall be indicated by the first letters, as per column 1 of Table 5;
ii. Second letter, is optional, and shall indicate the supporting function as per
column 2 of Table 5.

in which
K = equipment function letter code of a compressor
164 = process unit 16400
11 = equipment sequence number of compressor in the same unit
A and B = are the letters indicating two identical compressors (either working in
parallel or in series or compressor with single spare)
S = common spare (e.g. for K-16420 and K-16421)
Example 2:
GT-207A
GT -207B
GT -208S
in which:
P = equipment function code for turbine of generator
2 = process unit 200
7 = equipment sequence number of pump in the same unit
A and B = letters for two identical pumps (working either in parallel or in series or
equipment with single spare)
S = common spare (e.g. for P-208 and P-209)
Example 3:
E-6006A
E-6006B
in which:
E = equipment function code of a heat exchanger
60 = process unit 6000
6 = equipment sequence number of pump in the same unit
A and B = letters for two identical heat exchangers (working either in parallel or in
series)

NOTES: 1. For equipment that requires two or more letters, the most important function of the equipment shall prevail.
For example, a jet is used for mixing purposes, M is preferred to J.
2. The letters I and O should be avoided as it might be confused with the numbers 1 and 0.

Example:
Equipment in package unit A-5450 which consists of 1 unit of Strainer, 1 unit of Pump and 2
units of Vessels.

4.1 GENERAL
ALL line numbers of piping line in P&ID and piping drawings shall be identified with the
following components (see 4.2).
NOTE:
1) For offshore platforms, a location code may be inserted between in front of the fluid code. The location code shall be
defined by the Owner.
2) Owner to define the usage of DN or NPS.
4.2.1 DN Number
The DN number is the nominal pipe size in ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
designation.
For piping that crosses to another unit, either directly or indirectly on a pipe bridge, pipe track
or other interconnecting system, the line numbers shall be assigned to the corresponding unit
of origin seen in the direction of flow.
For lines originating from other sources that is entering a unit without any other identification
system, the line number shall be assigned corresponding to the unit they enter.
For utility headers on common pipe bridges or tracks not entering a specific unit shall be given
a line number corresponding to the unit of origin seen in the direction of flow.
Utility lines from utility headers entering a processing unit shall be given number(s) of the unit
it is entering.
