It does not Pay to Tell Lies

In 1888, a sailing ship was caught in a storm near Sydney. A huge wave crashed over the
ship. The sailors only had time to jump into the sea before the ship sank. The crew’s pet
monkey also ended up in the water.

A dolphin swimming by offered to take the monkey to dry land on its back. On the way, the
dolphin asked the monkey, as a joke, if he knew Governor Philip. “Oh yes! I know him well.
He is a friend of mine,” replied the monkey.

The dolphin knew then that the monkey was a liar. It was a hundred years since Governor
Philip came to Sydney with the first fleet. The dolphin then dived below the ways and left the
monkey in the sea.

Read the following passage and answer the questions.

The Lion and the Mouse

A mouse was running through the forest when it tripped over the paw of a lion. Waking up, the lion
grabbed the mouse then raised the small mouse to its mouth.

The mouse was terrified. “Please don’t eat me,” it begged.” One day I will repay you, if you spare
my life.”

This made the lion laugh and he let the mouse go.

The lion soon forgot the little mouse. He never thought he would see it again. But was caught in a
net by some hunters. They wanted to sell the lion to a circus. They made sure the lion could not
escape from their net while they went to get help.

The lion roared in anger. He struggled against the tight ropes.

The mouse heard the roars, and running to the spot saw the trapped lion. It gnawed through the
ropes before the hunter returned.

“You laugh at me, the other day,” said the little mouse, when they were safely away. ”And you did
not expect me to repay your kindness. Now you can see that even a little mouse can help a mighty
lion.”
