1) ACADEMIC WRITING IS DONE BY THE SCHOLARS FOR OTHER SCHOLARS. This means that you
SHS students are part of community of scholars; therefore you will read about, think about, argue about
and write about great ideas.
2) ACADEMIC WRITING IS DEVOTED TO TOPICS AND QUESTIONS THAT ARE INTEREST TO THE
ACADEMIC COMMUNITY. You must write something that your readers will find useful, to help your
readers better understand your topic or to see it in a new way.
3) ACADEMIC WRITING SHOULD PRESENT THE READER WITH AN INFORMED ARGUMENT. In this
academic writers should be analytical rather than personal. Writer should summarize, evaluate, analyze
and synthesize the text.

REPORT WRITING is a short, sharp, concise document which is written for a particular purpose and audience. It

 Your recommendation as to a course of action
 Conclusions

GUIDELINES IN REPORT WRITING:

 Know your topic, including what you are studying and for whom the report should be prepared.
 Keep your topic in mind at all times. All your thinking needs to be focused on your topic. Anything irrelevant
should be discarded.
 Structure of report should be precise.
 Make an executive summary to give busy “executives” a quick summary of the content of the report.
 Set out your introduction to provide the reader a short summary of the problem under discussion.
 Your report main body should be carefully structured in a way that leads the reader through the issue.
 Conclusion sets out what inferences you draw from the information, including experimental results.
 Recommendations suggest how you thinks the situation could be improved, and should be specific,
achievable, measurable and time bounded.
 Your aim should be absolutely clear.
 You should also avoid jargons.
 Consider your audience
