18ME653 ADVANCES IN MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY 3-0-0-3

Course Objectives

 Familiarize the basic concepts of precision and ultra precision machining technologies
 Inculcate knowledge on various technologies used to produce precision components using
micro machining and nano fabrication
 Address the various surface modification methods for improving the surface properties of
metals and non-metals

Course Outcomes

CO1: Recognize the need and identify suitable applications for precision / ultra-precision machining
process
CO2: Express the importance of high-speed precision machining processes and its applications
CO3: Select suitable micro machining and nano fabrication techniques used in manufacturing of
precision components
CO4: Appreciate the concepts of surface modification techniques and its applications to improve the

Precision Machining: Ultra Precision turning and grinding: Chemical Mechanical Polishing(CMP) - ELID
process – Partial ductile mode Grinding-Ultra precision grinding- Binderless wheel – Free form optics.
aspherical surface generation Grinding wheel- Design and selection of grinding wheel-High-speed grinding
High-speed milling- Diamond turning.
Micro Machining and Nano Fabrication: micro fabrication – types - top down– bottom up approaches –Micro
Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) - LIGA process –lithography steps –X ray lithography – masks – mask
materials. Micromachining –theory of micromachining –types – concepts – tools used in micromachining –
micro EDM – micro wire cut EDM – micro ECM – micro EDG - abrasive jet micromachining -water jet
micromachining. Laser based micromachining – types of Lasers – diode, Excimer and Ti: Sapphire lasers –
nanosecond pulse micro fabrications – shielding gas. Nano machining techniques- Sub micron lithographic
technique, conventional film growth technique, Chemical etching, Quantum dot fabrication techniques –
MOCVD – Epitaxy techniques.
Surface modification Techniques: Physical and chemical vapour deposition techniques, thermal spray coating
processes, vacuum arc deposition, sputter deposition, surface hardening, e-beam, laser and plasma processing,
diffusion bonding, hot isostatic pressing.

1.
The students should choose a typical product manufactured by advanced manufacturing process (micro/
precision / ultra-precision / nano). They should submit a project proposal for making the component by
selecting suitable process and machine tool.
2.
They have to review the literature relevant to the process chosen and identify the technological
advancements.
3.
Students have to present their findings and submit the report in the prescribed format at the end of the
semester.
4.
Industrial visits will be planned during the course to expose the students on practical aspects involved
with advanced manufacturing technologies
