1. Combination: Two or more simple compounds combine to form a single compound.
A + B  AB

2. Decomposition: A complex molecule breaks down to make simpler compounds.

AB  A + B

3. Single Displacement: One element trades places with another element in a compound.
A + BC  AC + B

4. Double Displacement: Anions and cations of two different compounds switch places, forming
two new compounds.
AB + CD  AD + CB

5. Combustion: Oxygen combines with a hydrocarbon (contains hydrogen and carbon) to form
water and carbon dioxide.
C?H? + O2  CO2 + H2O + heat

Balance the following equations, state the reaction type, and write the word equation!

1. BeO + CO2  BeCO3 _____________________________Reaction Type

2. Al + CuCl2  Cu + AlCl3 _____________________________Reaction Type

3. Fe(OH)3  Fe2O3 + H2O _____________________________Reaction Type

5. C2H5OC2H5 + O2  CO2 + H2O _____________________________Reaction Type

Diethyl ether +
For the following, balance the equation and give the reaction type. You don’t have to write the word
equation!

6. Al + HCl  AlCl3 + H2 _____________________________Reaction Type

7. MnCO3  MnO + CO2 _____________________________Reaction Type

8. BaO + CO2  BaCO3 _____________________________Reaction Type

9. AgNO3 + KCl  AgCl + KNO3 _____________________________Reaction Type

10. C25H52 + O2  CO2 + H2O _____________________________Reaction Type

How Do I Know What Type of Reaction It Is??

1. Does your reaction have oxygen as one of its reactants and carbon dioxide and water as products?
Then it’s a combustion reaction.

2. Does your reaction have two or more chemicals combining to form one chemical? Then it’s a
synthesis reaction.

3. Does your reaction have one large compound falling apart to make several small ones? Then it’s a
decomposition reaction.

4. Does your reaction have any compounds that contain only one element? Then it’s a single
displacement reaction.

5. If you haven’t answered yes to any of the above questions, then you’ve probably got a double
displacement reaction.
For each of the following (1) determine the reaction type, (2) complete the word equation,
and (3) write the balanced chemical equation. Do not forget the 7 diatomic molecules.

(SD = single displacement, DD = double displacement, S = synthesis, D = decomposition, and C = combustion)
