Abstract
Recent scientific research is laying the groundwork for a new approach in treating various
pathologies, showcasing the interdependence in terms of intestinal, physical and mental health. Also
referred as the second brain, the intestinal microbiome is a unique imprint for each individual, and its
content of microorganisms, in terms of type and amount, establishes the overall health of the body.
The new clinical findings highlight the significant role that the intestinal microbiome has in regaining
homeostasis and correlate food patterns with the prevalence of certain pathologies. MyNewGut FP7
EU is an European project which performed a multidisciplinary approach to the microbiome issue by
analyzing the interactions of food and environmental factors in altering the microbiota, leading to the
development of metabolic and behavioural disorders. The project was developed and spanned over
a period of five years, between 2013 and 2018, and managed to highlight, following interconnected
translational research, the role of the intestinal microbiome in metabolic health, the negative impact
of high fat diets on the nervous system and the intestinal microbiome, and the essential role of in‐
creased dietary fiber intake in decreasing the symptoms of depression, in adjusting body weight, and
in reducing the development of chronic metabolic diseases.
