(b) Prove that the line x − 2 y + 10 = 0 is a tangent to the circle whose equation is
x 2 + y 2 = 20.
y = 0 ⇒ x 2 + (0) 2 = 49
⇒ x 2 = 49
∴ x = 49 = ±7
∴ (−7, 0), (7, 0) are the x-intercepts.
3 (b) FINDING THE POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN A TANGENT AND A CIRCLE:
STEPS
1. Isolate x or y using equation of the line.
2. Substitute into the equation of the circle and solve the resulting
quadratic.
1. x − 2 y + 10 = 0 ⇒ x = 2 y − 10
2. x 2 + y 2 = 20
⇒ (2 y − 10) 2 + y 2 = 20
⇒ 4 y 2 − 40 y + 100 + y 2 = 20
⇒ 5 y 2 − 40 y + 80 = 0
⇒ y 2 − 8 y + 16 = 0
⇒ ( y − 4)( y − 4) = 0
∴y =4
As the quadratic has only one solution, the line is a tangent to the circle.
3 (c)
Equation of C: centre (h, k ) = (−1, 2), r = 5
( x − h) 2 + ( y − k ) 2 = r 2
⇒ ( x − (−1)) 2 + ( y − 2) 2 = (5) 2
∴ ( x + 1) 2 + ( y − 2) 2 = 25
C : ( x + 1) 2 + ( y − 2) 2 = 25
p (2, 6) ∈ C ?
(2 + 1) 2 + (6 − 2) 2 = (3) 2 + (4) 2
= 9 + 16 = 25 ⇒ p (2, 6) ∈ C
K : ( x − 8) 2 + ( y − 14) 2 = 100
p (2, 6) ∈ K ?
(2 − 8) 2 + (6 − 14) 2 = (−6) 2 + (8) 2
= 36 + 64 = 100 ⇒ p (2, 6) ∈ K
Write down the centres of C and K.
C : ( x + 1) 2 + ( y − 2) 2 = 25 ⇒ centre p1 (−1, 2)
K : ( x − 8) 2 + ( y − 14) 2 = 100 ⇒ centrre p2 (8, 14)
COLLINEAR POINTS: Three points are collinear if the slope of any two points
equals the slope of any other two points. b
Ex. a, b and c are collinear if you can show that:
Slope of ac = Slope of cb c
a
To show all three points are on the same line (collinear), show that the slope of pp1 equals
the slope of pp2.
REMEMBER IT AS:
y2 − y1
m= ....... 3
x2 − x1 Difference in y ′s
Slope m =
Difference in x′s
p (2, 6) p1 (−1, 2) 2 − 6 −4 4
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ Slope of pp1: m1 = = =
x1 y1 x2 y2 −1 − 2 −3 3
Therefore, p lies on the line which joins the centres of the two circles.
