1 DESCRIPTION

1.1 Operating Principle

The CEIA Metal Detector described in this handbook is intended for applications in interlocked cabins.
The device operates as a pair of distinct metal detectors, indicated respectively in this manual as Metal
Detector 1 (abbreviation MD1) and Metal Detector 2 (abbreviation MD2) and consists of:

 a transceiver antenna constituted by a transmitter column TX and a pair of receiver columns (RX1 and RX2).
The Metal Detector 1 is formed by the column TX and the column RX1. The Metal Detector 2 is formed by the
column TX and the column RX2.
 A control unit CU, made up of:
 a variable magnetic field generator FG
 a pair of receivers (R1 and R2), one for each receiver antenna.
 a processing and control unit PCU, which determines if the variation of the signal received by each
receiver antenna is due to metal masses in transit of a certain shape, volume or composition. If this
signal exceeds a preset threshold alarm, specific for each receiver, the system provides an alarm signal, through
optical and audio indicators and by means of a relay.

1.2 Some helpful guidelines for metal detectors

The parameters which best characterize a Metal Detector are as follows :

 Discrimination: This parameter reflects the variation in sensitivity between potentially dangerous metal
objects (due to their particular shape compared with their volume) and personal effects (such as coins,
keys, watches, buckles, etc...). When a detector with low discrimination is used, personal effects can
cause a large number of false alarms, rendering the system ineffective in practical terms.

 Uniformity in detection efficiency: This parameter is closely connected with the linearity of the magnetic
field generated inside the Metal Detector. Generally speaking, the greater the uniformity, the better the
discrimination.

 Sensitivity: alarm activation threshold: the greater the sensitivity, the smaller the metal mass which will
cause an alarm.

 Interception speed: the transit speed of a person through the metal detector archway usually depends on
situational factors, and can vary considerably. The sensitivity of a good Metal Detector should be
independent of the speed of transit.

 Programming: C.E.I.A. have designed their Metal Detectors to include the possibility of selecting the
settings of the operational parameters: this predisposition facilitates both the installation of the device
(rejection of external sources of interference) and adaptation to the user’s requirements (orientation
towards ferromagnetic and/or non-magnetic metals). This feature is particularly important in the detection
of weapons made of light metal.

 Immunity to interference: environmental electromagnetic interference of mechanical or electrical origin is

the principal cause of false alarms, because it augments the effective signal of the mass to be detected.
Particular attention must therefore be paid to the Metal Detector’s immunity to this type of interference.

 Harmlessness to life support systems and storage media: the field emitted by the Metal Detector should
be below the values set by international standards which guarantee harmlessness to life support systems
such as pace-makers, adrenaline pumps etc. Observance of these limits also means that there is no
effect whatsoever on computer-type storage media.

 Synchronization: multiple installations of Metal Detectors are very common (just think of an airport
departure terminal). To allow several Metal Detectors to operate in a restricted area without influencing
each other, it must be possible to synchronize them without the help of cable connections.

 Power supply flexibility: wide tolerance range for the input voltage and emergency batteries which cut in
automatically ensure that the Metal Detector continues operating in the case of variations or cuts in the
mains supply.

 Set-up and calibration with respect to the reference sample: a modern Metal Detector must allow its
installation in whatever environment, without any interference caused by other external devices. The
security level may usually be adjusted acting on sensitivity: CEIA’s Metal Detectors are also provided with
a special command (IS) allowing the direct selection of the functioning parameters which determine a
security level conforming to the International Standards. If installed in a metal interlocked cabin, consider
that the set of the parameters that determine the safety level depend also on the surrounding metal
structures and the working distance between transmitting and receiving antenna. It follows that storage of
the settings that can be called up with the IS command must follow a test verification conducted on the
cabin in which the metal detector is being installed.

 Maintenance: a modern Metal Detector generally incorporates a self-diagnosis system which identifies
any sabotage and which also signals accidental faults. Modular construction furthermore allows the faulty
parts to be replaced quickly and easily, thereby minimizing the time the device is out of operation.

2 INSTALLATION

Before proceeding to install the device read the warnings and instructions in this section carefully.
Please note that CEIA is not responsible for any damage that may result from installations that do not
follow these guidelines.

2.1 General installation notes

Unpacking the Metal Detector

Handle the material with care during unpacking operations.
All accessories needed for installation of the Metal Detector (screws, wrenches etc.) are supplied with the
device.

Transit requirements
The probe will be positioned, according to the requirements dictated by the transit, in such a way as to allow
the maximum flow of people and observance of the rules for installation.

Stability
To operate properly the antenna should not be subject to shocks or movement. Follow the installation
instructions and ensure that the Metal Detector probe is stable and firmly anchored.

Perpendicularity and alignment

During assembly of the panel antenna, carefully check the perpendicularity and alignment of the transmitter
and receiver sections, ensuring that they are anchored at the right distance.

Holes
It is strictly forbidden to make holes in the Metal Detector antenna or to insert screws in positions, or of
lengths, not expressly indicated by CEIA. Damage due to such actions is not covered by the product warranty.

Mains power supply

Check that the voltage supplied by the mains corresponds to the detector’s supply voltage (refer to “Technical
characteristics” section).

The use of a different mains voltage may damage the equipment. The protective ground conductor
must not be fused.

Models with Control Unit separate from the probe

During set-up, the connecting cables between the Control Unit and the antennae should be suitably distanced
from other electrical cables and mains supply lines. If this is not possible, enclose the cables in iron pipe
shielding of suitable diameter.

2.2 Electromagnetic compatibility

C.E.I.A Metal Detector is an apparatus which adapts well to the widest possible range of working conditions,
and is especially immune to parasitic electromagnetic interference; however, to obtain best results,
particularly at high sensitivity, a few precautions relating to the structure in which the detector is going to be
placed should be taken. Sources of interference can be of two types:

a) of a mechanical nature
b) of an electrical nature

2.2.1 Interference of a mechanical nature

As you know, a Metal Detector generates an electromagnetic field able to induce in its receiving section an
electromotive force which, when modified by metal objects in transit, makes the appliance operate. The flux of
the magnetic field, however, also invests the space surrounding the probe.

The first rule is to ensure maximum rigidity in neighboring metal structures and stable anchoring of
the metal detector probe.
Neighboring metal structures can introduce field absorption, which can be caused by:

1) the movement of metal masses, either large or particularly near the antenna (doors, ceilings, etc.);
• Fixed metallic structures located in the immediate vicinity of the Metal Detector can be more
suitably replaced with panels in Formica, Bakelite, polycarbonate or other insulating materials. If such
structures make up the supporting structure of a cabin, they must be extremely solid so as to avoid any
possible shifting during the movement of the doors. It is however advisable to distance the metal
detector from lateral metal panels by at least 10cm . The actual distance will, however, depend on the
mass of the structure and its construction material. For example, non-magnetic stainless steel has a
lower impact on performance.
• Ceilings of sealed cabins: allow breathing spaces so as to avoid movement of the ceilings due to
compression of air during movement of the doors.
• Doors: if the doors are made of metallic material, they must be located at a distance of at least 50cm in
the panel models, and 60 cm in the column models (such distances are approximate and may vary
depending on the structure of the doors); the loop formed by the metallic profiles of the door must be
insulated (see Table II-B).
If the doors are of insulating material the precautions described above are not necessary. It is
however advisable, especially if the doors open towards the Metal Detector, that the lock be placed on
the door-post and that the opening into which the door-bolt enters be made of a non-metallic material
(for example, Teflon). The hinges should be limited in size and in peripheral movement. Any swing-
back brackets should have their body attached to the door-post and not to the door. Any decorations,
movement mechanisms, screws, etc., should preferably be made from insulating material: if this is not
possible, it is advisable to limit the size of such fixtures and to use non-magnetic material (brass,
aluminum, stainless steel, etc.).
• Weighing devices: should have the minimum possible number of moving metal parts adjacent to the
Metal Detector antennae.

2) presence of electromagnetic loops made up of structural components (metal frames, glass doors,
metallic ceiling strips, etc.) that because of movements or vibrations are not stable. If the loops are
subject to movement, they must be distanced from the antennae or eliminated by means of insulating (see
Table II-B). Should the loops be fixed, originating from structures and sections that surround the Metal
Detector, they must be insulated by means of an appropriate split or made electrically stable by welding.

• Metal door-frames, metallic ceiling strips or unstable supporting floors: place at a distance,
replace with non-metallic materials or insulate with appropriate cuts the loops formed by such fixtures.
• Doors: insulate any possible structural loops (see Table II-B); if there are spring levers for swing doors
they should be insulated so as to avoid forming a loop.
• Thresholds: if made of metal they should not touch the base of the cabin thereby forming an unstable
loop.

2.2.2 Electrical interference

Such interference is caused by the proximity to the antennae of power supply cables (electromagnetic field
generated by alternating currents) or impulsive sources of electromagnetic interference (electric motors
with a high ignition absorption and related power supply cables, fluorescent lights, emergency generators, air
conditioning units, remote-control switches, etc.).

1) Power supply cables:

 Cables inside the cabin. These cables should be at a distance of at least 20cm from the sensitive
probe, particularly from the receiving part (the distance depends on the circulating current) and
twisted with a pitch not greater than 2,5cm (should this not be possible, they should be inserted into a
screening tube made of ferrous material at least 2mm thick). The cables serving lights or other
equipment should not under any condition create loops in the vicinity of the probe.

 Cables outside the cabin. The strong current passing through the electrical supply conductors
generates a large magnetic field. Possible solutions are:
o increase the distance between the metal detector and the electrical conductors.
o in general, the buried ducts of the electrical conductors cannot be moved; in this case:
o the metal detector must be moved away
o if possible, adjust it to minimize disturbance.

2) Internal or external sources of electromagnetic fields of various nature: these should either be
placed at a distance, eliminated or screened.
 Fluorescent lights: place the lamps and related reactors at a distance from the Metal Detector,
particularly from the receiving part marked with a red stamp; where possible substitute fluorescent
lights with filament lights.
 Electric motors: Equip electric motors with adequate mains screening and filters. Use of a.c. rather
than d.c. motors is recommended. Motors in the immediate vicinity of the Metal Detector's probe
should be screened by means of cylindrical iron casings with diameters big enough to enclose the
motors and with a minimum thickness of 2 mm; these cylinders must be drawn, of the type without
lengthways welding.
 Electrical locks: if these are positioned near the probe of the Metal Detector, it is advisable to use a
type provided with screening. The use of motorized locks is preferable, since they absorb a lower
level of current on ignition.
 Electromagnets, remote-control switches and continuous current motors: twist the related
power supply cables with a pitch not greater than 2.5 cm.
 Electrical panels: arrange the internal wiring to avoid coils created by phase, neutral and earthing
conductors.
 Switching power supplies for lighting or other: move away from the metal detector or screen.
 Loudspeakers, transformers, intercoms: screen or place at a distance from the receiving part of
the Metal Detector (recognizable by its red mark); to this end it is also possible to swap the
positions of the receiving and transmitting antennae. In the case of a sealed cabin intercom it is
advisable to arrange that it be fastened to both sides of the door, and to place it next to the
transmitting antenna.
 Detector mats: it is advisable to use resistance-varying or pneumatic models: electrical-contact types
should only be used with the insertion of a resistance of at least 10Ω in series at each segment.

2.2.2.1 Inhibition of the Metal Detector

As a further resource, there is always the possibility of inhibiting each Metal Detector in correspondence
with the interfering phenomenon, but only in cases where such action does not undermine the overall
security of the apparatus.

2.2.2.2 Orientation of the columns

If there is a localized source of electrical interference, the effects can be minimized by rotating the
columns on their axes: see the procedure described in the Maintenance section.
18 HI-PE/CN-AS-3C --- Rev. FI060K0118v1000xUK

2.2.3 Installation of coupled metal detectors - synchronization

When two or more Metal Detectors are to operate near each other (generally within 10 meters), they must be
synchronized by choosing an appropriate transmission channel for each one (CH function).

1. Arrangement of the antennae: never put the receiving antenna (RX) of a detector close to the transmitting
antenna (TX) of the adjacent equipment. Comply with the distances indicated in the figures below.
2. Programming: select, on every appliance, using the CH function, a different transmission channel,
according to the sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (see Programming Chapter). If there are environmental
electromagnetic disturbances that make it impossible to synchronize, the channels between 6 and 10 or
between 11 and 15 can be used. For supply from a 60Hz network, use the channels between 51 and 55
(or, alternatively, between 56 and 60, and 61 and 65).
3. Programming: for distances between detectors of less than 10m, select the value 0 for the NL function
(see Programming Chapter).

4.4 Installation checks

The operating parameters of each detector are pre-selected in the factory, based on its application. In
general, installation does not cause any particular problems when the tips given in the “General
Installation Instructions” have been followed.

There follows a guide to the sequence of operations to be followed if the Metal Detector is to operate at
maximum efficiency. After completing the detector’s mechanical installation and electrical connections, switch
it on and proceed as follows:

a) Choice of optimum transmission channel (command CH ). In the case of multiple installations, follow
the instructions in the section “Installation of coupled metal detectors: synchronization”.

b) Selection of safety level (IS command). Should you require a safety level specified by the international
standards, this can be selected using the IS command (see Programming Chapter). Thanks to the
extreme repeatability of the CEIA metal detector functions, this command makes it possible to adjust the
detector so that it satisfies the specifications of the selected standard, without actually performing the
test procedure.

WARNING: the IS parameter only provides selection between safety levels verified by testing in the
cabin. If installed in different types of cabins, select its model in advance using the CM command.

c) Sensitivity verification/adjustment ( commands SE1 and SE2 )

The sensitivity is pre-set in the factory according to the type of application using the SE1, SE2 and IS
commands (if applicable). Generally, it is only necessary to check proper detection of a sample defined
by security specifications, or in some cases supplied by CEIA itself. The correct sensitivity setting is the
lowest which ensures detection of the sample at all heights and in all orientations.

 If the equipment is installed in a verified cabin, after having selected a compatible IS level
it is necessary to verify the sensitivity using the following procedure:
Procedure for verifying sensitivity
 Take the metal mass considered to be the smallest sample to be detected, and make several
passages through the probe. The mass must be passed along the center line of the archway,
changing the orientation of the sample each time.
 Carry out the test passing the sample at different heights, checking the interception of the
sample over the whole of the useful archway, as defined in the security specifications.
 If necessary, change the sensitivity using the SE1 and SE2 commands.
 Perform the procedure on both metal detectors.

 If the equipment is being installed in an unverified cabin, leave the factory IS selection
unchanged and determine the necessary sensitivity using the following procedure
Procedure for selecting sensitivity
* Take the metal mass considered to be the smallest sample to be detected, and make several
passages through the probe. The mass must be passed along the center line of the archway,
changing the orientation of the sample each time.
* Carry out the test passing the sample at different heights, so as to find the sensitivity level that
ensures interception of the sample over the whole of the useful archway, as defined in the
security specifications. Sensitivity can be adjusted through SE1 and SE2 commands.
* Perform the procedure on both metal detectors.
HI-PE/CN-AS-3C --- Rev. FI060K0118v1000xUK 31

d) Check for electrical noise. Check that activation of electrical devices around the Metal Detector does
not cause interference: the display should not show more than one asterisk in the green sector
* (AD=1P).

If there is a localized source of electrical interference, the effects can be minimized by rotating the
columns on their axes: see the procedure described in the Maintenance section.

e) Check for mechanical noise. Check that the movement of metal masses around the Metal Detector
(metal structures in general, doors, furnishings, trolleys, ) does not cause interference: the display
should not show more than one asterisk in the green sector * (AD=1P).

f) Personalization of general management parameters. Set the general management parameters, such
as the volume and tone of the alarm (commands AV, MV and AT), according to your particular
requirements

If by any chance the Metal Detector does not operate correctly after the procedure described above
has been followed, please consult the “Maintenance” section of this manual. We would also like to

4.5 Advanced programming- Remote programming

4.5.1 Serial communication

CEIA Metal Detectors can be programmed via the device’s keypad and/or from a remote PC station via a
serial line connection to the RS 232 interface.
The CEIA cable, code 54567 (length 3m), can be used for connection to a computer.

PC 54567 MD

Terminal Function
2 Input data, serial communication
3 Output data, serial communication
5 Ground
Connection of a metal detector (MD) to a PC

When arranging the cables, it is advisable to run the serial connection cable as close as possible to
the power supply cable.

4.5.1.1 Communication system configuration

Metal Detector
Select the baud rate on the Metal Detector (function BR)

Terminal or computer
Select the function mode on the computer:
- type: ANSI/BBS, VT100
- baud rate
- 8 data bits
- 1 stop bit
- no transmission protocol
- automatic line feed
- tabulation every 8 characters
- full duplex (fdx)

4.5.2 Wireless connection (BLUETOOTH)

By enabling the BLUETOOTH interface using the BTE command, it is possible to connect to the metal
detector in wireless mode, using the CEIA MD Scope utility.

4.5.3 Free access to programming phase (without password)

Press ENTER to access the programming phase. The prompt " > " will appear on the terminal.
E.g.:
ENTER
> programming phase

4.5.4 Execution of commands in remote programming

• Everything entered via the terminal keyboard will be displayed on the monitor.
• The delete key (BACKSPACE) can be used to correct any possible input errors.
• The command will be executed once the carriage return key has been pressed (ENTER) .
• The syntax for the commands is strict. If any non-valid syntax is entered, an error message will be sent
by the device. Either upper or lower case characters can be used to enter commands.
HI-PE/CN-AS-3C --- Rev. FI060K0118v1000xUK 33

4.5.5 Programming levels

Access to the programming phase may be controlled by a password or be unprotected. There are different
programming levels:

User level, accessed by entering the ‘user password’:

The terminal displays the ‘ > ‘ prompt; in local programming the display shows ‘U’ on the left:
uAV 2 .
 The user can define his/her own password using the NP function..
 Only some of the functions are available to the user (these are selected by the super-user using the
UP function). The user is usually the operator in charge for screening operations.

Super-user level, accessed by entering the ‘super-user password’:

In remote programming, the terminal displays the ‘ # ‘ prompt; in local programming the display shows
‘S’ on the left: sAV 2 .
The super-user can define his/her own password using the NP function.
The super-user can also decide which functions are available to the user (function UP).
The functions necessary to install and use in common applications are available to the super-user.

;;;;
At each programming level, only the password relating to that same level can be modified.

The equipment is usually delivered from CEIA with a password already set for super-user level, while
user level access is unprotected. WE RECOMMEND CHANGING THE PASSWORDS IMMEDIATELY
AFTER INSTALLATION AND AT INTERVALS THEREAFTER, TO PREVENT ACCESS TO
PROGRAMMING BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS.

4.5.5.1 Password definition

The password can be changed by means of the NP command, during a programming phase.

Local Programming: use and keys to select the characters, press the key to confirm. The
password is made up of 6 letters or numbers.
E.g.: (example password: ANDREA)

NP
------ st
selection of 1 character
0-----
:
A- - - - - st
confirmation of 1 character
A00000 nd
selection of 2 character
A10000

confirmation of 6 character

Remote Programming: insert the password by means of the keyboard.

The password is made up 6 letters or numbers in upper case or lower case which are then followed by a
carriage return (ENTER).
Do not use spaces or other punctuation characters.

E.g.: (example password: ANDREA)

NP=ANDREAENTER

terminal keyboard (remote programming).

Local Programming
a) The password is made up of 6 letters or numbers.
b) Press PROG key: 6 dashes will appear on the display: ------
The first dash flashes to indicate the position of the cursor.
c) Insert the password by activating the and keys to select the characters and then pressing the ENTER
key to confirm.
d) After entering the last character, the programming phase starts. If the password is not recognized, the password
must be re-entered (go to point b).
e) At the end of the session, press PROG .

E.g.: correct operation (password: ANDREA):

If a mistake is made, the display returns to the normal operation sign .

Remote Programming
a) After powering up the terminal and Metal Detector (wait the end of the initial warming up period), enter the password
by means of the keyboard.
b) If the password is recognized, the programming phase prompt will appear (> for user level, # for super-user level).
Otherwise the password must be re-entered.
After the third failed attempt to enter the password, the device will pause for 10 seconds to avoid any computerized
search for the password by ill-intentioned persons.
c) At the end of the session, enter the PE command (Programming End, see below).

E.g.: correct operation, user level:

. . . . . . ENTER entering of the password

> programming phase (user level)

flexion of metal parts near the antenna which cause strong variations in
the magnetic field:
 identify and eliminate these metal structures, or, where this is not
possible, insulate them.
 in the case of installation near big metallic structures (distance less
than 0.5 m), check that when these latter are physically shaken
(e.g. by knocking them) they do not cause interference in the metal
detector.
 (*) If the signal received by the metal detector has a high
variation (GN  8 or in any event if the display shows more than
one asterisk in its green sector ** ), increase the
stability of the system
 Access system with two interlocked metal doors
If the signal does not change noticeably when vibrations occur,
try opening and closing the entry doors: if the interference is
linked to this kind of movement, the signal will vary. Two
possibilities can be noted:
 The variation is slow and follows the door movement:
in general: move the Metal detector further away from the
door which causes the interference
door made of metal sections: break the loop formed by the
sections
metal parts which pass close to the metal detector during
movement of the door: replace with corresponding parts
made of insulating material deformation of the supporting
structure: strengthen the structure or reduce the weight of
the door
 The variation is fast and sudden, and occurs especially when
the door slams. In this case the variation is not due to the
door but to intermittent points of contact in the structure. See
point (*) for the steps to take.
If the source of the interference is still not clear, please contact our Technical Department and we
will give you all the information you need.

6.3.1 Column antenna orientation procedure to minimize electrical interference

The procedure illustrated allows excellent results to be obtained only if there is a single clearly-defined
source of interference in the cabin.

If there are sources of noise present, either electrical or mechanical, it is important to take measures to
reduce the interference as much as possible.
To execute the procedure the EN (electrical noise) function may be used.
Obviously, the procedure must be carried out in an environment in which no external sources of interference
are present.

First arrange the columns so that the recognition marks (red for the
receiving column RX, green for the transmitting column TX) are
TX RX
facing each other.

Rotate the RX column so as to minimize the noise. TX RX
