Background of the Study

Romantic-Passionate Love (RPL), or being “in love” is a euphoric state experienced in

relationships cross-culturally. It is characterized by exhilaration, obsessive thoughts, and
increased energy (Aron, Fisher, Mashek, Strong, Li, & Brown, 2005). And as teens grow and
develop, the creation of peer relationships both for friendship and romance – is a major focus
of their social and personal lives. The pursuit of romantic relationships becomes increasingly
important as teens mature physically and emotionally, and explore how romance factors into
their emergent identities (AMANDA LENHART, MONICA ANDERSON, AND AARON SMITH, 2015).

The quality of the relationships athletes develop in and out of sport is important
because they may positively or negatively impact athletes’ performance success and overall
well-being (Sophia Jowett and Duncan Cramer). In fact, complete dedication to sport can
influence athletes’ personal relationships (Montgomerie & Mair, 2002). On the other hand,
athletes’ sports participation and personal relationships are closely linked, and their associated
demands can potentially lead to stressors (e.g., conflict, disagreements, depression, and
anxiety)

Filipino couples are among the most satisfied in their relationships in Asia, next only to
Cambodia, according to a study by pre-need provider Pru Life UK.
The major purpose of this study is to understand the romantic relationship of athletes
and to understand its effect on their overall performance.

Research Questions

1. How do athletes view romantic relationship?

2. Why do athletes engage in a romantic relationship?

3. Are the athletes motivated to train if they are engaged in romantic relationship?

4. Are the athletes motivated during the game if they are engaged in romantic
relationship?

5. Is a romantic relationship has a significant effect on the overall performance of

athletes?

Scope and limitation

Negros State College of Science and Technology (NONESCOST) athletes. The aspects looked into
were their Motivation during training, Attendance every training, Punctuality, motivation during
the game and performance during the game.

Although the research has reached its aims, there were some unavoidable limitations. First,
because of the time limit, this research was conducted only in short period of time. Second, it
conducted on a small size of population. It will only be conducted in the NONESCOST’s athlete
who are enrolled in second semester. Therefore, to generalize the results for larger groups, the
study should have involved more athletes at School and levels. Second, the students’
overloaded work, to some extent, might affect the result of the correlation between the
students’ motivation and performance during training and game
