MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Students should have the subsyllabus, schedule, textbook with them for each class. Computers or
tablets are permissible, not required, to use in class for note taking and following of power
points or lecture notes. The materials are posted on Canvas in the class section and are for the
students personal use per their preference.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Concurrent enrollment with N222IN, see syllabus description for N222IN.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The student will:

1. Apply knowledge and the nursing process to establish care for the client with endocrine
disease
2. Utilize Maslow’s Hierarchy of Basic Human Needs to prioritize care for the endocrine
imbalanced client.
3. Utilize pathophysiological knowledge to understand endocrine imbalances
4. Apply knowledge of cultural, social, and gender influences in the care of a client with
endocrine imbalances.
5. Apply knowledge of life stage development and the effects on endocrine imbalances

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Attendance is required at all sessions in each course for which the student is enrolled. Students
are expected to attend all classes, be on time, and prepared to participate in learning. Attendance
will be taken at the beginning of each class. One (1) point for each absence will be deducted
from the final overall grade of this content area.
E-MAIL COMMUNICATION:
All communications via email will be made through the Canvas email, which utilizes CCC email
addresses. No email will utilize personal addresses outside of the CCC email system.

QUALIFIED STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:


Qualified students who have a disability that may require some special arrangements in order to
meet course requirements should contact the Special Services Office (769-4098 or 769-4099) in
the Dr. H. A. Miller Student Services Center as soon as possible to ensure that your needs are
appropriately met.

In an effort to ensure you have the support necessary to be successful, Clovis Community
College has an Early Alert Referral Program. If I feel you could benefit from additional support
outside of the classroom, I may make a referral. If you would like any additional support outside
of this classroom, you may request a referral.

GRADING POLICY:
Nursing 222IN must be passed with a grade of 77% or above. Enodcrine system is 8% of the
N222IN grade.

80-89 B
77-79 C
60-76 D
59 or < F

COMPUTER EXAMS:
Exam scores are 100% of the Neurology grade. THREE (3) computer exams will be
administered. Exams are scheduled (see the class schedule for dates and times) all students must
take the exam at the scheduled time. If a student is unable to take the exam at the scheduled time
a ten (10) point deduction will be taken from the students’ grade. This applies to exams taken
late or ahead of the scheduled date and time. If a student arrives to the scheduled exam more
than five (5) minutes late the ten (10) point deduction will be taken.

TUTORING:
Tutoring is available to students. At the instructors’ discretion a student may be referred for
tutoring after failing 1-2 exams. The student will be notified by the instructor via Canvas email.
The student is responsible for attending the “next scheduled” tutoring session once notified.
Students will print the email and take to the tutoring session, have the tutor sign and date the
email. Once tutoring sessions are completed the signed memo will be time stamped and dated
and placed in the referring instructors’ box.

Academic Dishonesty:
See the 2013-2015 CCC Catalog General Information section (under Academic Integrity) for the
current Guide for Student Nurses.
Should a student turn in any paper work that appears strikingly similar to any student ( past,
present, or current); including your own work from previous semesters; that individual will earn
a zero ( “0”) on that assignment.
Plagiarism:
As per the 2013-2015 Clovis Community College Catalog plagiarism is defined as follows:

Plagiarism which include but is not limited to: a) offering the work of another as
one’s own: b) offering the work of another without proper acknowledgment; and/or
c) failing to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material
taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines, reference works, Internet sources,
term papers, reports, or other writings of another individual.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If work is proven to be plagiarized the offering student(s) will
receive a grade of zero (“0”) for the assignment(s) and will be referred to the appropriate
College authority for disciplinary action which may include failure for the section and/or
course, suspension, and/or expulsion. In order to avoid plagiarizing, the student should state their
own thoughts in their own words, provide adequate citations within assignments and if in doubt,
ask questions.

HIPA:
Federal legislation passed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system;
components that affect health information include privacy, security, and the establishment of
standards and requirements for the electronic transmission of certain health information.

In summary: The HIPAA regulations require that health care facilities design and maintain
systems to protect the security and privacy of electronically transmitted data. The systems
must prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing, creating or modifying information
while at the same time allowing authorized users to have access.

All patient information is confidential. You may not share any patient related information via
word of mouth, by any social network, or electronically. Failure to maintain patient
confidentiality may result in a grade of not more than “76” for the course and could result in
dismissal from the CCC Nursing Program.

UNIT TITLE: Endocrine 222IN

MODULE TITLE: ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

CONTENT AREA: Assessment, management, and nursing care of clients


experiencing diseases and disorders of the endocrine system.
Pharmacologic agents related to the endocrine system.

INTRODUCTION:
The endocrine system consists of secretary glands situated in various areas of the body.
These glands secrete hormones directly into the blood stream affecting many body processes,
including growth, fluid regulation, metabolism, and stress management. The nurse must
understand the endocrine system and the complexities associated with its proper functioning in
order to provide optimal client care. A major component of treatment is pharmacological
therapy involving exogenous replacement of the missing hormones. The nurse must have full
understanding of these agents to best meet patients’ needs.

GOAL STATEMENT:
Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to utilize the nursing
process in the care of clients who experience health problems of the endocrine system
throughout their life span as a member of the professional health care team.

TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES


The student will:

1. Score 77% or higher on the selected forms of evaluation.


2. Apply knowledge gained in the classroom to clinical experience.

ENABLING OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
1. Relate the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system to related disease
processes.
2. Interpret the diagnostic and clinical significance of hematological, radiological and other
testing used to determine disease processes of the endocrine system.
3. Discuss the nursing care of clients with parathyroid and pituitary disorders.
4. Compare hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiters and thyroiditis, their causes, clinical
manifestations, management and nursing care through the life span.
5. Compare Addison’s disease to Cushing’s syndrome: their causes, clinical
manifestations, management and nursing care through the life span.
6. Discuss therapeutic uses, actions, adverse reactions, contraindications and precautions
for steroid hormones (corticosteroids) and proteinaceous hormones (thyroid,
antithyroid, calcitonin, and those related to the pituitary).
7. Discuss the nursing implications related to care of clients receiving drugs hormones
covered in this module.
8. Discuss prioritizing wholistic care for the individual that involves the variables
associated with an individual; physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, &
developmental.

MODULE TITLE: Management of Clients with Diabetes Mellitus

CONTENT AREA: Assessment, management, and nursing care of clients with disorders of
the pancreas. Pharmacological agents that are utilized in the care of a
client who has diabetes mellitus will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION:
Diabetes mellitus is one of the oldest diseases known to humans. It is a chronic systemic
disease of altered carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism caused by a relative or absolute
lack of insulin, or by the decreased ability of the body to use insulin. High levels of blood
glucose are only one component of the pathological processes associated with diabetes.
Diabetes mellitus can also be associated with serious complications of other body systems;
however, people with diabetes can take preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of such
occurrences.

Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to utilize the nursing
process in the care of clients who experience the health problems associated with diabetes
mellitus throughout their life span as a member of the professional health care team.

3. discuss the nursing care of clients with Type I and Type II diabetes.
4. compare and contrast Type I and Type II diabetes, their causes, clinical manifestations,
management and nursing care through the life span.
5. compare and contrast hyper- and hypoglycemia, their causes, clinical manifestation and
management by recognizing potential and actual safety issues that can arise with these
disorders.
6. formulate diabetes management goals for children and adolescents according to age-
appropriate concepts utilizing communication skills to communicate clearly, assertively
& therapeutically.
7. differentiate between diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar nonketotic coma.
8. describe the chronic complications of diabetes, the relationship between diabetic
control and prevention of these complications, and nursing management.
9. discuss the significance of client and family education in the management of diabetes
mellitus, including aspects of medications, diet and exercise.
10. utilize the nursing process as a framework for providing care to promote, maintain, &
restore an optimum level of wellness for the individual experiencing diabetes mellitus.
11. discuss the use of diet and exercise as therapies for diabetes mellitus.
12. discuss the various insulin preparations and oral hypoglycemic agents, their categories
and actions.
13. discuss prioritizing wholistic care for the individual that involves the variables associated
with an individual; physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, & developmental.
