Description

Based on the original EQ-i for adults, the EQ-i:YV™ measures the level of emotional and social functioning in
children and adolescents. As a strength based assessment, this product highlights areas of positive functioning as
well as areas for development. It can be used by psychologists, school counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists
to identify an individual's strengths and weaknesses in order to help that individual develop the skills needed for
academic, personal, and social success.

How to Use the Assessment


There are two versions of the EQ-i:YV—the original full-length version and the short version. Both versions are
available as hand-scored QuikScore™ Forms, and both are available in software and online formats.

The full-length version of the EQ-i:YV provides scores for all of the scales, as well as the two validity scales. It is
recommended for initial evaluations because it provides a broader assessment of functioning.

The EQ-i: YV(S) provides scores for all the scales on the full-length version, with the exception of the General
Mood scale and the Inconsistency Index. It is ideal for repeat administrations to measure the effectiveness of
interventions, and is also used as a screening instrument to identify possible problem areas.

Technical Information

The normative sample for the EQ-i:YV consists of a large number of children and teenagers from elementary,
middle, and high schools across North America. Norms are presented separately for boys and girls in four age
intervals.

About the Author

Reuven Bar-On, Ph.D.


Dr. Reuven Bar-On is the director of the International Institute of Applied Intelligence in Denmark. He is also
associated with the Collaborative to Advance Social and Emotional Learning at the University of Illinois and the
Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University. Dr. Bar-On has been
involved in defining, measuring, and applying emotional intelligence since 1980. He coined the term "EQ" in 1985
and published the EQ-i, the first test of emotional intelligence, in 1997. Dr. Bar-On coedited the first textbook on
emotional intelligence, The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence, with James D.A. Parker. With Richard Handley, in
1999, he coauthored a book, Optimizing People, on ways of enhancing individual and organizational effectiveness.

James D. A. Parker, Ph.D.


Dr. James D. A. Parker is an associate professor of psychology in the Department of Psychology at Trent University,
Ontario, Canada. He is also the director of the Applications of Modeling in the Natural and Social Sciences graduate
program at the same university. He earned his Ph.D. in psychology from York University in 1991, and from 1991 to
1994 was a research fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Since 1992, Dr. Parker has
also worked as a statistical and psychometric consultant for Multi-Health Systems Inc. Dr. Parker has published over
75 articles and book chapters, mostly in the areas of personality and psychopathology, coping, and emotion. Much
of his recent work has focused on the study of regulation of emotion, and the link between emotional intelligence,
mental and physical health.
