TEXT I. Read carefully and answer…
Bobby's Camping Trip

Bobby was very excited! His family was going on a camping

trip this weekend! His mom had made a list of items that they
would need to bring and Bobby was in charge of checking each
item off as she packed them in the car. "Cooler," his mom said.
"Check." Bobby replied. "Lantern, three sleeping bags, three
pillows and sunscreen," his mom rattled off. Bobby thought she
was going too fast, but didn't ask her to slow down. He wanted
to hurry and get to the campground. "Check, check, check," he
said, checking items off of the list as fast he could. Finally they
had the car packed and Bobby showed his mom the list that had all of the items checked off. "Are you sure we got
them all?" his mom asked, looking worried. Bobby promised that they had everything. A couple of hours later they
arrived at the campground. "It's so pretty here," Bobby's mom said, "Let's get the tent, set up, and then we can
explore." But they couldn't find the tent. Bobby had been checking items off of the list too quickly and they had left
the most important item behind.

THE JAGUAR

A long time ago, Jaguar, the Master of Fire, ate cooked

meat, while people had to eat their meat raw. Jaguar used
bows and arrows to hunt his food, while the people had to
chase and catch animals that they wanted to eat. Jaguar
had a broad, strong face and long, sharp teeth. He was a
formidable being. But one day in the jungle, he took pity
on a hungry man who was having trouble catching an
animal to eat. Jaguar took the man back to his home,
where the man was able to warm himself before a dancing
fire. Jaguar gave him grilled meat to eat. It had a delicious, unfamiliar smell, and the man gobbled it up. Then Jaguar
shared his weapons with the man. He taught him how to use bows and arrows to catch animals to eat. In return, the
man killed Jaguar’s wife and stole his fire. Ever since, people have been afraid that the angry Jaguar will attack
them, and they avoid the big cats. No longer trusting people, jaguars live solitary lives in the jungle, waiting for their
chance at revenge.

TEXT IV. Dialogue…

Doctor Klein: Good morning, Cecilia, how are you feeling today?
Cecilia: I do not feel very well,
Doctor Klein. I hope that you can treat my illness.
Doctor Klein: I'm sorry that you feel very sick. Tell me some of your symptoms so that I can give you a proper
diagnosis.
Cecilia: I have not felt well since yesterday afternoon. The symptoms began with a headache and a gradual sore
throat. I drank tea with lemon and honey, and I went to bed early. However, I am extremely exhausted, and I don't
feel any better today.
Doctor Klein: I have seen these symptoms recently in some of my other patients. I'll check your temperature and
examine your throat in order to give you a proper diagnosis.
Cecilia: Thank you, Doctor.
Doctor Klein: Open up and say "Ahhhhhh...”
Cecilia: "Ahhhhhh...”
Doctor Klein: Oh, my! I can already see that your throat is very red. Your temperature of 100 degrees indicates that
you are running a mild fever. I am afraid that you might have the flu.
Cecilia: What is the best way to cure my symptoms?
Doctor Klein: You will need plenty of rest, and you should drink fluids frequently in order to stay hydrated. You've
also just started to show symptoms, so I can prescribe you a medication that can reduce fever and shorten the
duration of your illness.
Cecilia: Should I stay home from work as well?
Doctor Klein: Yes, you should remain in bed until the fever breaks. You should also wait until 24 hours after the
fever has broken before you return to work. You do not want to risk getting your coworkers sick as well.
Cecilia: I suppose I will just take it easy and relax for a couple of days. Thank you, doctor, for all of your help! Doctor
Klein: No problem! Try your best to rest for a couple of days. I hope you feel better soon!
