DESIGNED CHECKED SHEET
TITLE: Hydraulic Calculation of Bridge at 95+193 (Ariyoor Bridge)

1.0 Design Data
Total Catchment area of river = 11.9 sq. km
Length of the River(L) = 9.76 km

2.0 Peak Design Discharge Calculation
2.1) Empirical Formula
a) Dickens Formula
Peak Design Discharge Q  =  C A3/4 m3/s
where,
A is the Catchment area in sq.km.
C is  Constant  = 22 in Western Ghats
3
Q = 140.96 m /s

2.2) Rational Method

Peak Design Discharge, Q  = 0.028 P f A Ic m3/s
where,
P  ‐ Percentage co‐efficient of run‐off  = 0.3 (IRC‐SP‐13‐2004, Table: 4.1)
f   ‐ Fraction factor  = 0.95 ((IRC‐SP‐13‐2004), Fig.4.2)
A  ‐ Catchment area in hectares   = 1190 hectares
F
F  ‐ 100 years Return period rainfall for 24 hrs
100 years Return period rainfall for 24 hrs = 32 cm ( subzone‐5(b) plate‐14)
cm ( subzone‐5(b), plate‐14)
T  ‐ Duration of rainfall in hours  = 24 hrs
2/
Ic  ‐ Critical intensity of rainfall in cm per hour = cm/hr
1

where, Io is the one hour rainfall = /2 1 1/cm

tc   ‐ Time of concentration in hours =  (0.87 x L3 / H) 0.385

where,
 L is the distance from the critical point to the bridge
 H is the fall in the level from the critical pt. to the structure in m  = 352 m
Therefore, Time of concentration, tc = 1.26 hrs
Ic  = 14.72 cm/hr

3
Peak Discharge, Q = 139.78 m /s

Note: As per IRC‐5:2014, cl. 106.3.1.5, Rational formula is applicable for catchment area less than 25 sq. km.

3
Design Discharge Q = 141 m /s

3.0 Details of Bridge

3.1 General details:
Clear span of minor Bridge  = 9.27 m
Clear waterway = 8.80 m
No of span = 2
Wearing coat = 65 mm

3.2 Levels
Lowest FRL = 61.795 m
Highest FRL = 62.335 m
Lowest Bed Level   = 56.220 m
Cross slope = 3.6 %

V is the velocity of water in m/sec considered uniform throughout cross section
2/3 1/2
V  =   (1/n) x R  x S (Manning's formula)

Note: The trial and error method has been adopted to calculate HFL, such that the maximum discharge from empirical
formula and  rational formula is equal to the  discharge from area Velocity Method.
