IAHE Brainstorming session on

Long-Span Bridges
19th September, 2020, Saturday @ 11:00 hrs. on Webex meeting

Dear Highway Professionals,

Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE), an academy of Ministry of Road Transport

and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India dedicated for capacity building of highway
professionals is starting a series of brainstorming sessions (90 minutes duration on Saturday of
every month) on the areas of importance in the road sector.

2. As you are aware, a number of long span bridges have been constructed by MoRTH,
NHAI, NHIDCL and State Governments and furthermore urgent need is felt to properly plan,
design and construct long span bridges keeping in view different alternatives for spanning
arrangements of different types of superstructures and foundations keeping in view functional
needs and economy. The construction of bridges across water bodies having widespread
waterways, excessive depths of flow, high velocity of current and scour have always been a
challenging task. Long Span bridges have a significant role to play at such difficult locations
especially to facilitate safe and sustainable connectivity with least disturbance to the natural
surrounding and ecology.

3. To understand the issues and discuss the challenges, 1st brainstorming session on
‘Long-Span Bridges’ has been planned on the 19th September, 2020 (Saturday) from 11:00 to
12:30 hrs. on Cisco Webex meeting application. The topic of the session is most apt in today’s
context to boost rapid development of road infrastructure especially in North and North East for
efficient and speedy mobilization of strategic resources along the border, as well as bridges over
big rivers in other parts of the country. Shri D. Sarangi, Additional Director General, MoRTH and
Director, IAHE will start the session at 11:00 hrs and eminent and distinguished international
bridge expert, Prof. Mahesh Tandon, Managing Director, Tandon Consultants Pvt. Ltd. will
deliver the talk on Long-Span Bridges.

4. All highway professionals from MoRTH, NHAI, NHIDCL, BRO, CPWD, CRRI, NRIDA, IRC,
MES, Engineer Corps, RITES, Indian Railways, IRCON, State Public Works Departments, Central
and State PSUs, Faculty from IITs/NITs/academia, experts from Consultants, Contractors and
concessionaires and invited to participate in the deliberations please. There is no registration

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

PROF MAHESH TANDON, International PE (India)

Prof Mahesh Tandon, Managing Director, Tandon Consultants Pvt. Ltd. is an international
expert in the field of Structural Engineering. Many of the structures designed by Prof Tandon
and Tandon Consultants have been widely acclaimed and have received recognition in India as
well as internationally.

He has spearheaded the development of new codes of practice and path-breaking bridge
technologies suited to Indian conditions. These include pioneering work in the field of
Segmental construction, Integral construction, Accelerated Bridge Construction, Long span
bridges and Structures for Metro (both viaducts and underground). His structures have been
described as highly creative, futuristic, aesthetic, environmentally sensitive and innovative.

He has accreditation of International P.E. (India) and is a Fellow of the Indian National
Academy of Engineering (INAE).

He is the Recipient of Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Roorkee (2018).

Under the AICTE program INAE appointed him Distinguished Visiting Professor at IITs @
Kanpur, Roorkee & Gandhinagar (2005-2015). Currently he is continuing as Guest Professor
IIT Gandhinagar (2019-2021).

His passion remains to inspire the next generation to adopt Civil Engineering as their first
choice for studies and profession.

He is associated with IAHE as guest faculty in training various highway professionals over
last 30 years.
