Two independent single phase semi converters are supplying the armature and field
circuits of a separately excited dc motor for controlling its speed. The firing angle of
the converter supplying the field such that maximum current flows. The machine
parameters are Ra = 0.25Ω and Rf = 147Ω, motor voltage constants are 0.7032 V/A-
rad/sec. The load torque is T= 45 N-m at 1000rpm. The converters are fed from 208V,
50Hz ac supply, and the friction and windage losses are neglected. The inductance of
armature and field currents are sufficient to maintain currents constant and ripple free.
Determine a) field current b) delay angle of armature converter c) The input power
factor of armature converters.
2. A single phase half controlled converter is fat from at 120 volts 60Hz single phase
supply and provides variable DC voltage at the terminals of a dc motor. The thyristor
is triggered continuously by a DC signal. The resistance of armature resistance 10Ω.
Because of fixed motor excitation and high inertia the motor speed is considered
constant so that back EMF is 60V. Find the value of armature current, neglecting
armature inductance.

the converter in the armature circuit.

separately excited DC motor by a single phase full converter. the firing angles of
converters in the field circuit are zero. The armature and field resistances are 0.25Ω
and 200Ω respectively. the torque and voltage constants are 1.1, the firing angle of
converters in the armature circuit is 450 and the armature current is 50A. find the
torque developed and the motor speed. Assume that the brush contact drop is
1V/brush.
6. The speed of a 20H.P,210V,1000rpm series motor is controlled by a single phase full
converter the combined field and armature Resistance is 0.25Ω, Kaf = 0.03N-m/A2 and
Krcs = 0.075V-s/rad. the supply voltage is 230V. assuming continuous and ripple free
motor current. Determine the following for firing angle α = 300 and speed
N=1000rpm.
a) Motor current b) Motor Torque c) Supply power factor.
7. a single phase full wave converter controls the speed of a 10HP, 1500rpm separately
excited DC motor. The rated motor current being 18A at a particular load and the
armature resistance being 0.3Ω. find the armature voltage and back EMF if the AC
input is 230V and firing angle α= 450. calculate the firing angle to keep the motor
current at its given value if the polarity of the motor back emf is Reverse it by
reversing field excitation what is the amount of power fed back to the supply.Input
AC supply to be 220V.
8. a separately excited DC motor of 220V,1200rpm,8A has armature resistance of
0.75Ω. it is fed from a single phase fully controlled bridge rectifier whose source
voltage is 230V,50Hz. Assume load current to be continuous determine the following.
a) motor speed at α= 450 and torque of 8N-m,
b) Developed Torque at 450 and speed of 800rpm.
9. A 220V,1200rpm,80A 0.2Ω separately excited DC motor has armature resistance
which is fed from a single phase full converter with AC input 230V,50Hz for
continuous conduction. determine the following.
a) firing angle and motor rated torque at -700rpm.
b) motor speed for α=1500 and half rated torque.
10. A 220V 1500 rpm 10A separately excited DC motor is fed from single phase fully
controlled rectifier with an ac source voltage of 230V 50Hz Ra=2 Ω .Assuming
continuous conduction find firing angles for a) half the rated torque and 500rpm and
b)rated motor torque and -1000 rpm.
